Kalahari Desert
The Kalahri Desert stretches like a crescent moon from east to north. The origin of the desert landscape dates back some 500 million years. The sand glows reddish in the evening light. This is what makes the Kalahari so attractive. Here, the green acacias and yellow grass stand in stark contrast to the blue sky and the red sand dunes of the Kalahari Desert, which stretch for hundreds of kilometers.
Fish River Canyon
This canyon is the second largest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon in the USA. It is 161 km long and up to 550 m deep. Enjoy fascinating views over gorges and rock formations created over millions of years by the Fish River. Also visit the hot springs of Ai-Ais and the Gondwana Canyon Park.
Namib Desert
In the Namib Naukluft Park you can admire the magnificent dune landscapes of the vleis. The most famous of these is Sossusvlei. In order to admire the extraordinary play of colors, it is highly recommended to get up very early in the morning and be enchanted by the magnificent colors. Extraordinary plays of color also await you at dusk.
Another highlight of the park is the Sesriem Canyon. The canyon is about one kilometer long and about 30 meters deep. At the upper edge of the canyon, the gap is so narrow that it is barely visible from the air.
Swakopmund
Despite having no more than 25,000 inhabitants, Swakopmund is one of the largest cities in Namibia. The proportion of people of German descent is particularly high here. Right on the beach, you could almost feel like you've landed somewhere on the North Sea.
Swakopmund's surrounding area also has a lot to offer. Trips along the beautiful dune-lined coast are particularly attractive, both to Walvis Bay, 30 kilometers to the south, with its picturesque lagoon, and to the National West Coast Recreation Area in the north.
Damaraland
Damaraland is generally very sparsely populated. During a drive through the area, visitors are repeatedly presented with impressive landscapes with bizarre mountains and vast plains. There are still many wild rhinos and desert elephants, mainly in the western part.
Around 100 kilometers west of the regional capital Khorixas, however, you will find the main attraction in Damaraland, the more than 2500 prehistoric rock engravings of Twyfelfontein, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Another highlight in Damaraland are the Ugab Terraces and the Vingerklip Rock Cliff on the way from Khorixas to Outjo.
Epupa waterfalls
The Epupa interrupts the course of the Kunene River, which separates Namibia from Angola. This river is fed so abundantly by other tributaries, including from the highlands of Angola, that it is the "fastest" river in Namibia. There is one large main waterfall and many smaller ones. Depending on the amount of water, the spots are more or less accessible on foot. Directly at the falls, you may also come across the Himba pastoral people.
Etosha National Park
With this national park you have reached another highlight. The center of the park is the Etosha Pan, which is about 5000 square kilometers in size. Etosha is also called the "great wide place". According to legend, a mother mourning her deceased child wept there.
In Etosha, you have the opportunity to see Namibia's wild animals up close. Apart from buffalo, the park is home to all species of the "Big Five" such as elephants, lions, rhinos and leopards.
Caprivi Strip
The Caprivi Strip is a narrow strip of land in the far north-east of Namibia, around 400 kilometers long. The once difficult road through the Caprivi, which was often almost impassable during the rainy season, was replaced by the paved Caprivi Highway in 2001, making it easy to reach the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and Chobe National Park in Botswana, both popular travel destinations in the north.
The abundance of water in the Caprivi ensures a large population of game. Elephants are particularly numerous, although you don't always get to see them in the dense vegetation. The game is protected in several reserves (Bwabwata, Mudumu, Lizauli, Mamili). However, there are no border fences, so that the animals can move relatively unhindered into the neighboring countries of Botswana and Zambia.
Waterberg Plateau Park
The plateau was declared a nature reserve between the First and Second World Wars. Due to its special nature, the Waterberg has several springs. Although rainwater seeps into the sandy soil of the plateau, it is also channelled through fissures and cracks in the sandstone. Sometimes these paths downwards are blocked, allowing water currents to make their way out. This is how the springs that are responsible for the lush flora and fauna in this area are formed.
The plateau is famous as the only Namibian breeding area for Cape vultures. In addition, many animal species such as giraffes, wildebeests, warthogs, cheetahs and many more can also be spotted.
