Security

Zimbabwe is a great travel destination with mostly very friendly inhabitants. However, the difficult economic situation of the last few decades has unfortunately left its mark. There is great poverty, especially in the countryside. Nevertheless, crime rates are quite low, violence is very rare and is mostly politically motivated. Tourists can move around the country in relative safety.

The current food supply situation is generally good, albeit expensive, as everything generally has to be imported. Medical care, especially in rural areas, is rather rudimentary and cannot be compared with European or South African conditions. Urgently needed medication should be carried with you.

Zimbabwe no longer has its own currency. The predominant currency is the US dollar, but euros or South African rand are also accepted. It is advisable to take sufficient foreign currency in small denominations with you, as change is given in so-called bond notes, which tourists are usually unable to use. You should not rely on the functionality of ATMs or credit card terminals. We recommend booking all accommodation with half board, all means of transportation and as many activities as possible in advance so that your travel budget only contains as much cash as necessary.

The supply of fuel is currently not guaranteed everywhere. For self-drivers, we recommend renting a vehicle with as large a tank as possible and refueling at every available opportunity. Many accommodations and car rental depots have fuel reserves for their customers in case of emergencies, so with the right planning you can get through the country relatively easily.

Roadblocks by the police can occur, but have currently decreased significantly. If you come across a roadblock, keep calm and remain friendly. Tourists are welcome, as they bring much-needed foreign currency into the country. Do not get involved in political discussions and avoid political demonstrations and anything that could be interpreted as illegal journalistic activity. Photographing animals and landscapes is of course possible without any problems.

Take your cell phone with you (ask your mobile phone provider about roaming), borrow one at the airport or buy an inexpensive prepaid device. The general emergency numbers are 994 (rescue service/emergency doctor), 993 (fire department) and 995 (police). You can reach a general emergency center by calling 999 or 112 on cell phones. The mobile phone network in the country is well developed. Current safety information can be found at www.auswaertiges-amt.de.
