Climate and travel time

The year-round southeast trade winds ensure a pleasant and tropical climate in Mauritius.

With moderate temperatures (the average annual temperature in the interior of the island is between 19 and 20 °C, in the coastal area 23 to 24 °C), there are only two seasons:
the warm and humid summer season from November to April with average maximum temperatures between 25 and 30 °C and the comparatively dry southern winter from May to October, which is on average around 5 - 7 °C cooler. During this period, maximum temperatures fluctuate between 19 and 25 °C. Although the southern winter is the drier season in Mauritius, rain showers are also frequent.

During the warm and humid summer, the island is occasionally hit by tropical cyclones. But the "normal" south-east trade winds also bring thunderstorms to the east side of the island and the mountains with high rainfall totaling 1,800 to around 2,100 mm annually, although mostly at night. There is still around 1,500 mm in the rain shadow of the mountains on the northwest side. As a result, the sun shines more often here and it is generally a little warmer.

For around two-thirds of the year, the wind on Mauritius blows from an easterly direction, with gusty winds prevailing on the eastern and southern coasts, especially in the southern winter. The north-western and western areas of the island are calmer, with the mountains in the center of the island shielding these regions. The windiest time on Mauritius is usually between mid-July and mid-August.

If you are not a windsurfer, you should therefore make sure you choose a hotel on the west or north-west side of the island, which is less rainy, sunnier and away from the wind.

Humidity is relatively high, especially in the southern summer, and varies between 70 percent on the coasts and 90 to 100 percent in the mountains.
The water temperatures around Mauritius range from 23 °C in August and September to 28 °C in March.
