Erongo, Kaokoveld & Etosha

On this safari, you will travel far away from the usual tourist crowds to the wild north of Namibia. Damaraland and Kaokoveld are among the least developed regions of the country. Here you can expect untouched nature between desert and waterfalls as well as an insight into the largely traditional life of the Ovahimbas.

Our journey begins in the capital Windhoek and takes us first to the striking Spitzkoppe, the "Matterhorn of Namibia", and into the magnificent nature of the Erongo Mountains. Via the wild Damaraland with its rock engravings, table mountains and desert elephants, we reach the remote Kaokoveld - a rugged natural beauty with rugged mountains, riverbeds rich in wildlife and, last but not least, the impressive Epupa Falls. Last but not least, we explore the famous Etosha National Park for more extensive game drives before we finally reach Windhoek again

The tours are led by a competent, German-speaking guide and are conducted with a maximum of 10 tour participants. This is an active tour with a number of fantastic hikes. You don't need to be particularly fit, but you do need to be in good physical condition.

Custom-built off-road vehicles are used for the tour, which offer a high level of comfort on Namibia's unpaved roads and also make it possible to discover the country off the beaten track. The vehicle has large sliding windows for each row of seats and a practical lifting roof for a clear view on safaris.
For the lunch break, we set up our safari chairs in a nice shady spot in the middle of the great outdoors and a beautifully laid table in the African bush. We carry supplies for a rustic outdoor lunch in an electrically operated cool box, which also has enough space to cool drinks. A water tank on the vehicle supplies us with water where there is normally no tap.

The accommodation on the lodge safaris is simple, beautiful and varied - from lovingly run guest farms to lodges in spectacular locations. You will spend the night in comfortable rooms or permanent tents with private bathroom/WC.

DAY 1: WELCOME TO NAMIBIA
All tour participants arrive in Windhoek by midday. If time permits, we will visit the small, beautiful Daan Viljoen National Park. Large herds of zebra, wildebeest and blesbok as well as giraffe and ostriches await us there. In the afternoon we get to know the capital better and in the evening we stop off at a traditional Namibian steakhouse. Afterwards we fall asleep in the nice guesthouse.

DAY 2: SPITZKOPPE (APPROX. 280KM)
The first stage takes us directly north. During a short stopover in Okahandja, we visit the woodcarvers' market, where local artisans offer their handicrafts. Our destination for the day is the Spitzkoppe, the "Matterhorn of Namibia", where we take a two-hour hike to view the local rock paintings and explore the area. The trees around the Spitzkoppe are home to various species of weaver birds and whole packs of cliff dwellers often sunbathe on rocky outcrops. You will spend the night in a cozy camp at the foot of the Spitzkoppe.

DAY 3: TWYFELFONTEIN & DAMARA TRADITION (APPROX. 220KM)
On our way northwest, we reach Damaraland today. We visit the rock paintings at Twyfelfontein and find Africa's largest collection of rock engravings with over 2000 depictions (UNESCO World Heritage Site). During a two-hour hike, we will discover many of these early works of art. In a traditional Damara village, we will then be shown how hides are tanned and spearheads are made, which plants are edible, and how fire is lit with fire sticks. The visit ends with dancing and singing, and we spend the night in a beautiful lodge near Twyfelfontein.

DAY 4: DESERT ELEPHANTS & KHOWARIB GORGE (APPROX. 200KM)
In the morning, we go in search of desert elephants in the Huab riverbed. Here we experience an impressive landscape with wide valleys and red table mountains. This route can only be tackled with off-road vehicles, as we are mainly in a dry riverbed with exciting stretches of deep sand. The journey then continues north, where we reach a lodge in the Khowarib Gorge in the afternoon. We will stay here for the next two nights.

DAY 5: ANIMAL PARADISE ON THE HOANIB RIVERBED
At Sesfontein, what is usually referred to as a "road" ends and the four-wheel drive routes begin. We will drive southwest along the Ganamub riverbed until we reach the Hoanib. This dry area is not only rich in sandy passages, but also in game: large herds of various antelope species can be found, as well as giraffes, leopards, the rare black rhinos and desert elephants - one of the last wildlife paradises. We will be on a game drive all day and only return to our lodge in the evening.

DAY 6: JOUBERT PASS & OPUWO (APPROX. 180KM)
Today we head for the village of Opuwo via the steep Joubert Pass. The landscape is very mountainous, alternating between table mountains and conical mountains, and the rock shines in countless colors and shades. The town of Opuwo is a melting pot of cultures: Herero, Ovambo, Damara and Himba come together here. We take time to walk around the town and then reach our lodge, which is perched on a hill just outside the town. From the restaurant and pool you have a gigantic view of the vast hills of Kaokoland.

DAY 7: PARADISE UNDER PALM TREES - THE EPUPA WATERFALLS (APPROX. 180KM)
Today we reach the northern border river to Angola, the Kunene. At the Kunene River, we move into a beautifully situated, comfortable tented camp under palm trees near the waterfalls and visit the Epupa Falls in the afternoon. Namibia's Epupa Falls are an impressive natural phenomenon stretching along the Kunene River on the border with Angola. These breathtaking waterfalls consist of a series of cascades and rapids that stretch over a distance of about 1.5 kilometers. The turquoise waters of the Kunene plunge spectacularly into the depths here, creating a picturesque backdrop of spraying foam and swirling eddies. The waterfalls are also very important to the local Himba people, a traditional tribe that lives in the region. They regard the Kunene River and the Epupa Falls as sacred sites and revere them as sources of life and fertility.

DAY 8: OVAHIMBA VILLAGE
In the morning, we visit a Himba village - an exciting and authentic insight into the way of life of this tribe, which is still very much focused on tradition. The afternoon is at leisure, for example for a hike along the Kunene River or a visit to the settlement at Epupa.

DAY 9: GEPARDEN RECEPTION STATION (APPROX. 440KM)
We always find it hard to leave this paradisiacal place. We head back towards Opuwo and from there continue on a good asphalt road for a change, which takes us quickly to Kamanjab. Just outside the town, we reach a nice little guest farm where the owners are also the hosts. Here we are warmly welcomed and have the opportunity to admire tame and wild cheetahs at close range.

DAY 10: WEST ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK (APPROX. 280KM)
Today, we reach Etosha National Park via the western Galton Gate. The western part of the national park was a restricted area for a long time and is therefore still unknown to many visitors. As a result, you will encounter lots of wildlife at the waterholes, but still hardly any other vehicles or visitors, allowing you to observe the wildlife in peace. At lunchtime, we reach Camp Olifantsrust, where we spend our lunch break. Afterwards, we continue our game drive to Okaukuejo. In the late afternoon, we leave the national park to spend the night in a lodge just outside the park boundary.

DAY 11: SAFARI DRIVES IN CENTRAL ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK
Another trip to Etosha National Park is planned for today. Morning and afternoon are the best times for game drives, as this is when the wildlife is most active. At midday, the animals rest in the shade, so we will also take a siesta by the pool at Okaukuejo at this time. We will be back at our lodge in time for sunset.

DAY 12: CROCODILE FARM
Today's route takes us further south via Outjo and Otjiwarongo. In Otjiwarongo we visit a crocodile farm, where we get an interesting insight. Those who wish can also sample crocodile specialties here. In the early afternoon we finally reach the last lodge of our trip. If you are interested, you can go on an optional afternoon game drive. In addition to the numerous plains game, there is also a very good chance of seeing white rhino here.

DAY 13: GOODBYE
After our last breakfast together, we return to Windhoek via the Okahandja woodcarvers' market, where you can buy more souvenirs, arriving at around 2 pm.
