ABOUT THIS TRIP
The Garden Route is probably the most beautiful coastline in South Africa and one of the country's highlights. Between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, you can experience the beauty of the Cape Peninsula, enjoy fine wines and good food in the wine regions, spot whales seasonally near Hermanus, explore the endless expanses and mighty mountain ranges of the Little Karoo semi-desert and relax on the endless beaches and in the dense forests between Knysna and Tsitsikamma National Park. You will also not miss the Big Five in Addo Elephant Park and a private game reserve. You will stay several nights in one place and can relax there or explore the surrounding area on day trips. For this tour, we have hand-picked top accommodation in the Superior Plus category.

POSITION BOSCH

Stellenbosch is the heart of South African wine production. Countless wine estates are lined up next to each other, and you can get to know South Africa's fine wines at one or two wine tastings. The scenically impressive mountain ranges offer unique hiking opportunities. The second oldest city in the country has a beautiful historic city center with many listed buildings in the Cape Dutch architectural style. Cafés, restaurants and boutiques invite you to stroll and linger. Thanks to the local university, Stellenbosch is a very lively and young city, despite its historical background.
Just outside Stellenbosch on the scenic Helshoogte Pass lies this small but very fine wine estate and luxurious boutique hotel with breathtaking views of the Simonsberg Mountains. Overnight guests can choose from 15 hotel rooms, suites and villas, all of which are equipped with bath/WC, flat-screen TV with DVD player, air conditioning, Nespresso machine, iPod station, minibar, balcony or terrace, safe and free WLAN. DAY 5: STELLENBOSCH
FULL DAY PRIVATE FOOD AND WINE EXPERIENCE
OPTIONALLY BOOKABLE FROM 175 € PER PERSON

You will take part in the following two activities in Stellenbosch:
You will be picked up at your accommodation in the morning and drive to the historic old town of Stellenbosch, where a very special city tour on the topic of history and enjoyment awaits you in South Africa's "Gourmet Capital". In addition to the most important historical events, you will learn about the locals' love for their food. For example, you will taste locally produced bread, cheese, sausage, coffee, ice cream and cakes.
At lunchtime, the journey takes you out into the scenic vineyards of Stellenbosch. You will stop at two hand-picked wine estates to get an overview of the diverse South African wine selection during wine tastings under expert guidance. On request, your guide will recommend a nice restaurant for a lunch stop (lunch optional). You will be dropped off at your accommodation in the afternoon.
Both activities are English-speaking and privately guided. The food and wine tastings are included in the price, lunch and other drinks and personal expenses are not included. These activities can also be conducted in German for an additional charge.
This service can be booked for an additional charge.
DAY 6 TO DAY 7 (APPROX. 110 KM):
HERMANUS

The tour continues to the "whale capital" of South Africa, Hermanus. Here you have the best opportunities to watch whales from the coast between June and November. Of course, you can also take a boat trip out to sea to get even closer to the largest mammals on earth. But Hermanus also has a lot to offer outside the whale season in the South African summer. There are excellent beaches, great restaurants and the Fernkloof Nature Reserve, a unique nature reserve with typical fynbos vegetation and many hiking trails. Even winegrowing has now left its insider status here in the Coastal Region. Over 30 wineries have joined together to form various wine routes.
This luxurious guest house is located on Hermanus' famous Grotto Beach with unobstructed views of the sea. In summer you can relax on the Blue Flag award-winning beach, in winter you can watch whales from your room. Several cafés and restaurants are within walking distance. The center of Hermanus is about ten minutes away by car. The modern guest house offers an outdoor terrace with sea view, a lounge area with bar and fireplace, a courtyard with pool and sun loungers as well as free WiFi. The five rooms have a bathroom/WC, a minibar, a tea/coffee maker, a safe, a fan, underfloor heating and a TV with DVD player. The Deluxe Rooms have a terrace with a limited sea view. The suites are more spacious and offer a terrace or balcony with a full sea view.
In the whale season from June to November, we recommend an optional additional overnight stay in Hermanus.

DAY 7: HERMANUS
BOAT-BASED WHALE WATCHING
OPTIONALLY BOOKABLE FROM 110 € PER PERSON

In the South African winter months from June to November, you have the best chance of spotting Southern Right Whales (right whales) and Humpback Whales (humpbacks) in Walker Bay near Hermanus. You can get within 50 meters of these gigantic marine mammals by boat. This is an experience that no one should miss, especially if the whales are not directly on the coast. If you are lucky, you may also spot dolphins, penguins, sharks and seals during the trip.
The trip takes about two hours and starts at the New Harbour in Hermanus (own arrival). The tour is in English and is conducted with additional people. A small refreshment is included in the price. We recommend booking this activity in advance, especially in the popular months of October and November, as places on the boat are limited and may be fully booked on site. If the trip has to be canceled at short notice due to weather conditions, we will refund the price after your trip.
This service can be booked for an additional charge.
DAY 7 TO DAY 8 (APPROX. 360 KM):
OUDTSHOORN

Oudtshoorn is the jewel of the Little Karoo semi-desert and the largest town along Route 62. The C.P. Nel Museum in the town center explains the history of the town and its rise to become the "ostrich capital" of South Africa. A stop at one of the local ostrich farms is a must, where you can learn a lot about the largest and flightless birds in the world and admire the historic ostrich palaces. The Cango Caves, a huge stalactite cave landscape that is one of the most impressive in the world, are definitely worth a visit. Adventure-seekers with the right vehicle can take a drive over the famous Swartberg Pass, but guided tours are also available. An insider tip is the Rust en Vrede waterfall, located east of the Cango Caves. Clear nights with little light pollution make for an impressive starry sky, and professional stargazers offer appropriate evening observation activities. On several farms, the cute meerkats can be spotted early in the morning on guided tours. Some interesting wineries, such as the Karusa Estate, offer wine tastings.
Rosenhof Country House is located on the northern outskirts of Oudtshoorn and is a lovingly restored Victorian-style villa for discerning guests. The town center with its many stores and restaurants is just a few minutes' drive away, and the Cango Caves are about a 25-minute drive away. All twelve luxurious suites have a bathroom/WC, air conditioning, a minibar, a safe, a tea/coffee maker, a TV, free Wi-Fi and a veranda. The Executive Suites are a little more secluded and also offer a lounge area and a veranda with views of the Swartberg Mountains and a private plunge pool. The accommodation has a pool, a bar, a restaurant, a fitness room and a spa area (for a fee).

DAY 8 TO DAY 10 (APPROX. 120 KM):
KNYSNA

You continue to the small town of Knysna with its famous lagoon, which is only connected to the Indian Ocean by a small strait. A boat trip on the lagoon is a real highlight. Knysna is the center of the Garden Route and offers many opportunities for daytime activities. The dense forests in the hinterland or the beautiful coastal sections are ideal for hiking, the nearby beaches for swimming and relaxing. From June to November, you may be lucky enough to spot whales. The town itself and the small waterfront with its cafés, stores and boutiques also invite you to stroll and linger.
The Lofts Boutique Hotel is located on Thesen Island, a small island connected to the Knysna mainland by a bridge. Thesen Island has a few small boutiques, vacation homes and bistros, but the majority of the island consists of private residences which are not open to the public. It is about a 15-minute walk to the Knysna waterfront and about a 20-minute walk to the town center. The hotel consists of 18 rooms with bath/WC, safe, TV, telephone, air conditioning, heating, minibar, coffee and tea making facilities. The Balcony Rooms have a balcony with a partial view of the lagoon. The Lagoon View Rooms have a view of the lagoon. The apartments have two bedrooms, each with its own bathroom/WC and a lounge area with kitchenette. The hotel offers a lounge area, a spa area (for a fee) and a sun deck with pool. Breakfast is not served directly in the hotel, but in an external café in the adjacent building.

DAY 9: KNYSNA
GARDEN ROUTE EXPERIENCE
OPTIONALLY BOOKABLE FROM 140 € PER PERSON

You will take part in the following two activities during your stay in Knysna:
Knysna is a paradise for hikers. You take part in a guided hike in the Robberg Nature Reserve. The small nature reserve, which is considered the most spectacular on the entire Garden Route, is located on a peninsula in the Indian Ocean. You will always have great views of the sea and, with a bit of luck, you may spot fur seals, dolphins, sharks or even whales (seasonal). You will embark on a moderate circular walk lasting around two and a half hours and have the opportunity to enjoy the fantastic surroundings time and again (privately guided, pick-up from your accommodation).
A sunset cruise on the Knysna lagoon is probably the most romantic thing the Garden Route has to offer. The dusk bathes the whole scenery in wonderful shades of orange and red. During the boat trip you have the opportunity to try the oysters for which Knysna is so famous. This is accompanied by a glass of chilled South African white wine. The boat trip departs from Thesen Island (own arrival, with additional persons).
All activities are in English. You need to stay at least two nights on site. Conservation fees are included in the price, meals and other personal expenses are not included.
This service can be booked for an additional charge.
DAY 10 TO DAY 11 (APPROX. 110 KM):
TSITSIKAMMA

The Tsitsikamma National Park is the largest contiguous forest area in South Africa and is ideal for hiking or relaxing. The hiking trails always offer fantastic views of the dense forests and the endless sea. At the Storms River Restcamp in the eastern part of the park, you can take short boat trips on the river of the same name. The famous Suspension Bridge, a suspension bridge over the river, is also located here. Various long hiking trails start directly at the camp. The western part, the Natures Valley, also offers beautiful nature and the best hiking opportunities. With a bit of luck, you can even spot whales (seasonal) and dolphins from land.
You will spend the night at The Fernery Lodge in a private nature reserve just east of the Storms River. From the lodge you have a breathtaking view over the Indian Ocean, the gorge of the Sanddrift River and the dense forests. There are seven lodge rooms in the main building and 13 detached chalets set slightly apart, all of which have en-suite bathrooms, a TV, minibar and tea/coffee making facilities. The Premier Suite has a fireplace and a deck with sea views. The Premier Rooms have a deck overlooking the gorge or the sea. The Lodge Rooms have a veranda with access to the garden. The Chalets have a veranda with barbecue facilities and a lounge area with kitchenette and fireplace. In addition to the double bed, the Family Chalets have two single beds for children under the age of 16. The twin units have two separate bedrooms, each with its own bathroom/WC and private plunge pool on the veranda. The accommodation offers a lounge area, a bar, a restaurant, a pool, a jacuzzi, a sauna and free Wi-Fi. Various hiking trails start right outside the door. Mountain bikes can be rented for a fee.

DAY 11 TO DAY 13 (APPROX. 250 KM):
ADDO

Your destination is the malaria-free Addo Elephant Park in the Eastern Cape, famous for its large herds of elephants, which gave the park its name. Nowhere else in the world are there more elephants per square kilometer than here in Addo. With a bit of luck, you may also spot other representatives of the Big Five, although the big cats are only found in relatively small numbers. A classic is the Addo Dung Beetle, a dung beetle species that can only be found here.
You’ll stay at the exclusive Camp Figtree, just an hour’s drive from Port Elizabeth and 15 km from the main entrance to Addo National Park. The camp is nestled amid the beautiful bush and mountain scenery of the Eastern Cape. You can enjoy the sweeping views right from the observation deck. Various guided safari activities are offered on-site, and self-guided activities such as sundowner walks are also available. You’ll also find a restaurant, a bar, a pool, and free Wi-Fi on site. All rooms feature a shower/toilet with a separate bathtub, a hair dryer, a safe, a bathrobe and slippers, mosquito nets, and a tea and coffee station. The Superior Boardwalk Suites offer access to a balcony with a stunning view of the valley. The freestanding Luxury Tents are classic safari tents in an “Out of Africa” style and offer plenty of privacy as well as an outdoor deck with a unique view of the valley. The Luxury Suites are very spacious and feature a lounge area with seating, a separate bedroom, a large bathroom, and access to a balcony with a great view of the valley.
The price includes a full-day game drive in an open off-road vehicle in the Addo Elephant Park. The activity is conducted in English and can be done with additional people. Conservation fees for Addo Elephant Park are already included, as are lunch and drinks.

GREATER ADDO

The private Kariega Game Reserve is located about an hour's drive east of Port Elizabeth in the beautiful Eastern Cape bush landscape between Bushmans River and Kariega River. The malaria-free reserve covers almost 12,000 hectares and is home to the Big Five - elephants, lions, buffalo, rhinos and leopards - as well as many other African wild animals. In contrast to the state national parks, only overnight guests have access to the private reserves. These are therefore much better suited to a short stay for unique animal sightings. The small lodges also offer a very personal atmosphere. Specially trained rangers ensure a first-class nature experience.
Ukhozi Lodge embodies the true romance and intimacy of Africa. With its hidden location in the bush, it offers its guests a lot of privacy and a unique panoramic view of a valley. The ten luxurious detached chalet suites have a bathroom/WC, air conditioning, minibar, safe, telephone and a veranda with a view and private plunge pool. The lodge offers a restaurant, a bar, a viewing deck, a boma (traditional campfire dining area) and a pool with sun deck.
For each overnight stay you take part in two guided game drives in an open off-road vehicle (English-speaking, participation with other people), which take place in the afternoon before dinner and in the morning before breakfast.

Shamwari is home to the Big Five: lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, and rhinos, as well as many other African wildlife species.
Bayethe Tented Lodge, built in the modern Out-Of-Africa style, is situated in the north-east of the Shamwari Game Reserve, far away from all other lodges. From a hill you have a unique view of the Eastern Cape bush landscape. The twelve freestanding semi-fixed tent suites have a bathroom/WC, air conditioning, a minibar, a tea/coffee maker, a safe, a lounge area and a viewing deck with a private plunge pool and outdoor shower.
