ABOUT THIS TRIP

This tour combines the most important highlights of the south and north of South Africa. Due to the domestic flight between the north and south, the number of kilometers to be driven and frequent changes of accommodation are reduced. For this tour, we have hand-picked accommodation in the Superior Plus category, which leaves nothing to be desired in terms of comfort and service. You will experience fascinating landscapes on the Panorama Route, in Eswatini and in the Little Karoo semi-desert, pristine wildlife in the Kruger Park and in Zululand, dense forests in the Garden Route National Park, endless beaches on the Dolphin Coast and near Knysna, culinary delights in the wine regions and Cape Town, one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

We are happy to change this tour itinerary or the rental car category according to your individual wishes. Please contact us for your personal offer. This trip can be started all year round, but we recommend focusing on the north from May to August. You should allow just under three weeks for this route. A four-wheel drive vehicle is not necessary for this route, but a vehicle with a higher wheelbase is helpful.

You will receive your rental car on arrival at Johannesburg Airport or at the agreed station. Graskop is centrally located on the famous Panorama Route. The highlight of the town is the Graskop Gorge, a deep gorge with a waterfall and adrenaline activities for the adventurous. Gods Window, the former gold mining town of Pilgrims Rest and the waterfalls Berlin Falls and Lisbon Falls are also within easy reach. You can experience the famous Blyde River Canyon, the Three Rondawels and the Bourkes Luck Potholes either on a round trip or on the way to or from the private game reserves in Kruger Park.

This modern boutique hotel is located not far from the small village of Graskop and therefore very central to the highlights of the Panorama Route. The location directly on the cliffs overlooking the Lowveld provides a breathtaking view. The 34 rooms and suites all have a bathroom/WC, air conditioning, a TV, a safe, a minibar, a tea/coffee maker and free WLAN. The Superior Rooms are approximately 20 square meters in size. DAY 2 TO DAY 4 (APPROX. 140 KM):

HOEDSPRUIT

Your destination is the private Karongwe Game Reserve in Kruger National Park, which is home to the Big Five as well as all other African wildlife. In contrast to the state-run Kruger Park, only overnight guests have access to the private reserves. These are therefore much better suited to a short stay for unique game viewing. The small lodges also offer a very personal atmosphere. Specially trained rangers ensure a first-class nature experience.

The exclusive Becks Safari Lodge is the flagship of the Karongwe Game Reserve and consists of only ten spacious and detached safari suites, which combine luxury with modern design and face the Makhutswi River or a waterhole. The suites have a shower/WC with separate bathtub, air conditioning, tea/coffee making facilities, a minibar, a mosquito net over the bed, a safe and a veranda with an outdoor shower and seating. The lodge offers an oversized infinity pool with viewing deck, a lounge, a bar, a restaurant, a boma (traditional campfire dining area) and free Wi-Fi.

For each overnight stay you take part in two guided game drives in an open off-road vehicle (English-speaking, participation with other people), which take place in the afternoon before dinner and in the morning before breakfast.

DAY 4 TO DAY 5 (APPROX. 150 KM):

HAZYVIEW

Hazyview is ideally located between the scenically unique Panorama Route and the world-famous Kruger Park. From here you can take day trips to the Blyde River Canyon, the Bourkes Luck Potholes and various waterfalls as well as to the Big Five and all other African wildlife. It is also possible to discover the highlights of the Panorama Route or the Kruger Park on the way to or from the private game reserves.

The upscale accommodation The Zarafa is located in the middle of beautiful bushveld near Hazyview, very close to the Kruger Park and the attractions of the Panorama Route. You stay in one of five private Asian-style villas, which are equipped with a bathroom/WC, air conditioning, a minibar, a TV, a safe, a tea/coffee maker, a lounge area with a fireplace and an outdoor terrace with a private plunge pool and views of the natural surroundings. One villa has two separate bedrooms. The accommodation offers a restaurant, a bar, a spa area (for a fee) and free WiFi.

DAY 5 TO DAY 6 (APPROX. 280 KM):

ESWATINI

The independent kingdom of Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) is an interesting facet of any trip through northern South Africa. Crossing this original and traditional country is very exciting in terms of landscape and culture. The center is the beautiful Ezulwini Valley with the two culturally interesting towns of Mbabane and Manzini on one side and the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary and Mantenga Nature Reserve on the other. Please note that the infrastructure and comfort cannot necessarily keep up with that of South Africa, and you will also have to allow for waiting times when crossing the border. You will be rewarded with an exciting and authentic piece of Africa.

Just a short drive from the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary and the capital Mbabane, this luxury boutique hotel is located in the middle of a beautiful botanical garden. Some interesting hiking trails start right outside the door. The 34 rooms all have a bathroom/WC, a TV/DVD player, a minibar, a safe, air conditioning, a tea/coffee maker and free WLAN. The Dove Nest Rooms are located in a beautiful villa and share a small private garden with seating. The Luxury Suites also offer a small lounge area and a dressing room. The Executive Suites also offer a spacious lounge area, a dressing room and a private veranda with seating. There is space for extra beds for children in these two room categories. The spacious Garden Villas have a separate bedroom, a lounge/dining area, a dressing room and a private veranda with seating. The resort offers several bars and restaurants, an outdoor terrace, a pool, as well as various sports and observation activities (some for a fee).

Alternatively, routing can take place south of Eswatini on South African territory.

DAY 6 TO DAY 8 (APPROX. 340 KM):

HLUHLUWE

Your next destination is the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park, which is divided into the northern Hluhluwe section and the southern Imfolozi section. The two rivers of the same name gave the park its name. The park is home to the Big Five, i.e. elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos and buffalo, as well as many other African wild animals. The rhino population in particular is larger here than anywhere else in the world. With over 20000 hectares of rolling hills and open savannah, the park is one of the most beautiful state game reserves in South Africa.

The luxurious Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge is the only private lodge in the Hluhluwe section of the park and offers breathtaking views over the African bush. The lodge has an outdoor pool, sun deck, fire pit, bar, restaurant and spa area (for a fee). The 16 modern rooms have a bathroom/WC, air conditioning, a fan, a minibar, a tea/coffee maker, a safe, a private outdoor deck and free Wi-Fi. The Family Rooms have two separate bedrooms, each with its own bathroom/WC. The Luxury Bush Villas have an additional lounge area with fireplace and a larger outdoor deck. The Honeymoon Bush Villas also offer a private plunge pool on the outside deck.

You take part in two guided game drives per night in an open off-road vehicle (English-speaking, participation with other people), which take place in the afternoon before dinner and in the morning before breakfast. You pay the entrance fees (conservation fees) on site.

The reserve is home to the Big Five and many other African wild animals. In contrast to the state-run Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park, only overnight guests have access to the private reserves. These are therefore much better suited to a short stay for unique game viewing. The small lodges also offer a very personal atmosphere. Specially trained rangers ensure a first-class nature experience.

The exclusive Leopard Mountain Lodge is perched on a hilltop and offers breathtaking views of the African bush, the Msunduze River in the valley, and the mighty Lebombo Mountains in the background. The nine detached luxury chalet suites feature an open-plan bathroom with a shower and separate toilet, air conditioning, a minibar, tea/coffee making facilities, and a veranda with an outdoor shower, seating, a hammock, a private plunge pool, and stunning views. DAY 8 TO DAY 10 (APPROX. 90 KM):

ISIMANGALISO WETLAND PARK

The iSimangaliso Wetland Park is a unique nature park consisting of wetlands and coastal areas, the likes of which cannot be found anywhere else in Africa. The park has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Covering an area of over 13,000 square kilometers, including 850 square kilometers of marine protected areas and a coastline of 220 kilometers, it offers breathtaking insights into various ecosystems and animal worlds. From the clear waters of the Indian Ocean and the largely untouched sandy beaches, there is a transition to forested dune areas and a mosaic of wetlands, grasslands, forests, lakes and savannah. Of the 6,500 animal and plant species most recently recorded, some are found only here or only in South Africa.

The luxurious Makakatana Bay Lodge is located about 30 minutes by car from the small town of St. Lucia in the middle of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park on the shores of Lake St. Lucia. The mixture of seclusion in nature as well as game viewing opportunities on land and water make this safari lodge a very special experience. The seven detached chalets offer maximum privacy and have a bathroom/WC, air conditioning, safe, tea/coffee maker, minibar and an outdoor deck with outdoor shower and outdoor bathtub. The Family Suites have two separate bedrooms that share a bathroom/WC. The lodge offers an outdoor deck with pool, a lounge, a bar, a boma (traditional campfire dining area) and free Wi-Fi.

You will take part in two guided activities per overnight stay (game drives in an open off-road vehicle, boat trips on Lake St. Lucia, beach safaris), which are conducted in English with other people.

DAY 11 (APPROX. 20 KM): DURBAN

ONEWAY FLIGHT TO GEORGE

A domestic or regional flight is the fastest and most convenient way to cover longer distances in southern Africa. Thanks to various competitors, there is a dense network of scheduled flights to a total of more than 25 airports. All local airlines fly with modern aircraft that meet the highest safety standards and are of course regularly maintained, just like in Europe.

The flight is operated in Economy Class. Depending on the airline, only one piece of checked baggage weighing 20kg to 23kg and one piece of hand baggage are permitted per person. You will receive details with your travel documents. Additional baggage, seat reservations and other services can be booked at very reasonable prices. We recommend arriving at international airports such as Windhoek, Victoria Falls, Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town at least two hours before departure; at smaller regional airports, 90 minutes is sufficient.

Please return your rental car to Durban Airport or the agreed location at least two hours before departure.

DAY 11 TO DAY 13 (APPROX. 60 KM):

KNYSNA

On arrival at George Airport or at the agreed station, you will receive your new rental car. You continue to the small town of Knysna with its famous lagoon, which is only connected to the Indian Ocean by a small strait. A boat trip on the lagoon is a real highlight. Knysna is the center of the Garden Route and offers many opportunities for daytime activities. The dense forests in the hinterland or the beautiful coastal sections are ideal for hiking, the nearby beaches for swimming and relaxing. From June to November, you may be lucky enough to spot whales. The town itself and the small waterfront with its cafés, stores and boutiques also invite you to stroll and linger.

The Lofts Boutique Hotel is located on Thesen Island, a small island connected to the Knysna mainland by a bridge. Thesen Island has a few small boutiques, vacation homes and bistros, but the majority of the island consists of private residences which are not open to the public. It is about a 15-minute walk to the Knysna waterfront and about a 20-minute walk to the town center. The hotel consists of 18 rooms with bath/WC, safe, TV, telephone, air conditioning, heating, minibar, coffee and tea making facilities. The Balcony Rooms have a balcony with a partial view of the lagoon. The Lagoon View Rooms have a view of the lagoon. The apartments have two bedrooms, each with its own bathroom/WC and a lounge area with kitchenette. The hotel offers a lounge area, a spa area (for a fee) and a sun deck with pool. Breakfast is not served directly in the hotel, but in an external café in the adjacent building.

There are always great views of the sea and, with a bit of luck, you may spot seals, dolphins or even whales (June to November).

You set off on the approximately 5.5 km long Witsand circular hiking trail and have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful surroundings time and again. The Robberg Nature Reserve is one of the most beautiful coastal reserves on the entire Garden Route. After around four hours, you will be dropped off at your accommodation in Knysna.

The tour language is English, no other people take part. Drinking water and entrance fees are included in the tour price. This is a moderate hike, you should be sure-footed. You can get within 50 meters of these gigantic marine mammals by boat. An experience that no one should miss. With a bit of luck, you may also spot dolphins, sharks and seals during the trip.

The tour language is English. The approximately two-hour boat trip takes place in an open speedboat (without WC) with other people. The start and end point is the jetty on Thesen Island, the journey there and back is your own responsibility.

This service can be booked for an additional charge.

DAY 13 TO DAY 14 (APPROX. 120 KM):

OUDTSHOORN

Oudtshoorn is the jewel of the Little Karoo semi-desert and the largest town along Route 62. The C.P. Nel Museum in the town center explains the history of the town and its rise to become the "ostrich capital" of South Africa. A stop at one of the local ostrich farms is a must, where you can learn a lot about the largest and flightless birds in the world and admire the historic ostrich palaces. The Cango Caves, a huge stalactite cave landscape that is one of the most impressive in the world, are definitely worth a visit. Adventure-seekers with the right vehicle can take a drive over the famous Swartberg Pass, but guided tours are also available. An insider tip is the Rust en Vrede waterfall, located east of the Cango Caves. Clear nights with little light pollution make for an impressive starry sky, and professional stargazers offer appropriate evening observation activities. On several farms, the cute meerkats can be spotted early in the morning on guided tours. Some interesting wineries, such as the Karusa Estate, offer wine tastings.

The Rosenhof Country House is located on the northern outskirts of Oudtshoorn and is a Victorian-style villa that has been lovingly restored for discerning guests. The center, with its many shops and restaurants, is just a few minutes' drive away, and the Cango Caves are about a 25-minute drive away. All twelve luxurious suites have a bathroom/WC, air conditioning, minibar, safe, tea/coffee making facilities, TV, free Wi-Fi, and a veranda. The Executive Suites are located slightly apart and also offer a lounge area and a veranda with views of the Swartberg Mountains and a private plunge pool. An Executive Suite has two bedrooms, each with its own bathroom/WC. The accommodation has a pool, bar, restaurant, fitness room, and spa area (for a fee).

POSITION BOSCH

Stellenbosch is the heart of South African wine production. Countless wine estates are lined up next to each other, and you can get to know South Africa's fine wines at one or two wine tastings. The scenically impressive mountain ranges offer unique hiking opportunities. The second oldest city in the country has a beautiful historic city center with many listed buildings in the Cape Dutch architectural style. Cafés, restaurants and boutiques invite you to stroll and linger. Thanks to the local university, Stellenbosch is a very lively and young city, despite its historical background.

Just outside Stellenbosch on the scenic Helshoogte Pass lies this small but very fine wine estate and luxurious boutique hotel with breathtaking views of the Simonsberg Mountains. Overnight guests can choose from 15 hotel rooms, suites and villas, all of which are equipped with bath/WC, flat-screen TV with DVD player, air conditioning, Nespresso machine, iPod station, minibar, balcony or terrace, safe and free WLAN. The hotel rooms are located in the main building and differ mainly in terms of room size. The villas and suites are located slightly away from the main building. The Two Bedroom Villa has a lounge and kitchenette as well as two bedrooms, each with its own bathroom/WC. The two Pool Suites share a private pool. For example, you will taste locally produced bread, cheese, sausage, coffee, ice cream and cakes.

At lunchtime, the journey takes you out into the scenic vineyards of Stellenbosch.
