Discover the magnificent landscapes of the Cape as you travel off the beaten track on the back roads between the two oceans and the arid hinterland. You start with the Atlantic Ocean with the Cape Peninsula and the West Coast, then continue into the lonely and breathtaking Cederberg Mountains. After a short detour to the wine regions, you will reach the arid Karoo semi-desert with all its bizarre beauty. Of course, you won't miss out on South Africa's fascinating wildlife, which you can get up close to on guided game drives in open off-road vehicles. Finally, you will reach the Indian Ocean at Sedgefield, the Great Unknown on the Garden Route.

DAY 1 TO DAY 3 (APPROX. 30 KM):

CAPE TOWN CAMPS BAY

You will receive your rental car on arrival at Cape Town Airport or at the agreed station. Welcome to the Mother City. Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. To get an overview, your first excursion should be to Table Mountain. A drive along Chapmans Peak Drive, an impressive coastal road that leads past the penguin colony at Boulders Beach to the Cape of Good Hope, is also a must. On the way, you can visit the oldest wine estates on the Cape in Constantia. The V&A Waterfront is inviting with its countless stores and restaurants. The ferries to the former prison island of Robben Island also depart from here. On weekdays, you can explore the city center, the colourful Bo-Kaap district and the Company's Garden on foot without hesitation.

The Ocean View House is located in the upmarket suburb of Camps Bay, with the mighty Twelve Apostles mountain range behind it and a fantastic view of the Atlantic Ocean. In the spacious, park-like outdoor area, everyone will find a nice place to linger. The Table Mountain cable car station can be reached in about ten minutes by car, the V&A Waterfront in about 20 minutes. Experience the Capetonian way of life: you start in the morning on a culinary excursion into the city of Cape Town. The itinerary may vary depending on the day of the week. During the week, you will discover the small and fine temples of indulgence where usually only the locals shop - far away from the usual tourist traps. Enjoy coffee, ice cream, bread, wine or chocolate from small local producers, for example. At the weekend, the famous food markets take place in various locations and are always worth a visit. At lunchtime, head to the oldest wine region in the Cape - Constantia. You stop at a local winery for a delicious lunch (optional). Of course, two wine tastings are not to be missed, where you will get to know the fine wines of the region. You will return to your accommodation in the afternoon.

The small fishing village of Paternoster is located around 150 km northwest of Cape Town on a long bay on the west coast. Here you will find plenty of peace and relaxation. In addition to a few stores and boutiques, there is an upmarket restaurant scene, with the Wolfgat Restaurant one of the best restaurants in South Africa. Nearby is the West Coast National Park, which is ideal for a day trip. During the wildflower season in the South African spring (August, September), whole areas look like colorful carpets. You can also watch whales here from June to November.

The exclusive Strandloper Ocean Boutique Hotel is located directly on the beach on the outskirts of Paternoster. Here you have plenty of peace and quiet and yet you can reach all the restaurants and stores in the small town on foot. Paarl is of course also one of the three major wine regions of the Western Cape, and wine lovers can discover exciting wine estates here and in the neighboring wine regions of Wellington and Swartland. Hiking enthusiasts will also get their money's worth in the Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve.

The impressive Grande Roche Hotel is located just outside the town of Paarl, yet nestled in an idyllic setting amidst the vineyards. You will be picked up at your accommodation in the morning by your English-speaking wine expert. You set off on a day trip to the up-and-coming wine regions in the Swartland north of Paarl. The region around the pretty village of Riebeek Kasteel has become a hub for innovative wines over the last ten years. Some of the best Shiraz' and Chenin Blancs in South Africa are grown here. The Swartland is also known for its high-quality olive products.

You will visit three to four boutique wineries, such as AA Badenhorst, Allersverloren, Lammershoek, Kloovenburg or Mullineux, and take part in wine or olive tastings. There will also be a nice lunch stop on the way (lunch optional). You will be dropped off at your accommodation again in the afternoon.

The 54 000 hectare Sanbona Game Reserve is situated in the heart of the Little Karoo at the foot of the Warmwaterberg between Montagu and Barrydale off the famous Route 62. Sanbona offers you relaxation, luxury and safari in the realm of the Bushmen of South Africa. The name is made up of the word "San", as the Bushmen are called, and the word "bona" as a sign of the indigenous people's hope for this land, where they lived freely for thousands of years. This is because former farmland was converted into a reserve here in the 1990s and returned to nature. Now, for the first time in 200 years, lions and cheetahs can be seen living freely in the Klein Karoo in the game reserve. But with a bit of luck, you can also spot the other representatives of the Big Five and many other African wild animals here.

The luxurious White Lion Lodge is located in the southern part of the Sandona Wildlife Reserve, nestled in the beautiful landscape. Oudtshoorn is the jewel of the Little Karoo semi-desert and the largest town along Route 62. The C.P. Nel Museum in the town center explains the history of the town and its rise to become the "ostrich capital" of South Africa. A stop at one of the local ostrich farms is a must, where you can learn a lot about the largest and flightless birds in the world and admire the historic ostrich palaces. The Cango Caves, a huge stalactite cave landscape that is one of the most impressive in the world, are definitely worth a visit. Adventure-seekers with the right vehicle can take a drive over the famous Swartberg Pass, but guided tours are also available. An insider tip is the Rust en Vrede waterfall, located east of the Cango Caves. Clear nights with little light pollution make for an impressive starry sky, and professional stargazers offer appropriate evening observation activities. On several farms, the cute meerkats can be spotted early in the morning on guided tours. Some interesting wineries, such as the Karusa Estate, offer wine tastings.

The Rosenhof Country House is located on the northern outskirts of Oudtshoorn and is a Victorian-style villa that has been lovingly restored for discerning guests. The center, with its many shops and restaurants, is just a few minutes' drive away, and the Cango Caves are about a 25-minute drive away. All twelve luxurious suites have a bathroom/WC, air conditioning, minibar, safe, tea/coffee making facilities, TV, free Wi-Fi, and a veranda. The Executive Suites are located slightly apart and also offer a lounge area and a veranda with views of the Swartberg Mountains and a private plunge pool. Join us on an almost eight-hour day tour to the highlights of Oudtshoorn and the surrounding Klein Karoo semi-desert. The day starts with a 90-minute ostrich farm tour, where you will learn all about the largest flightless bird in the world. Next, you will head to the famous Cango Caves, an impressive stalactite cave landscape, where you will take part in an easy 60-minute heritage tour.

We continue up the impressive Swartberg Pass, a scenic highlight of the Klein Karoo. Once at the top, a light lunch awaits you with breathtaking views. The next stop is the historic town of Prince Albert, where you go on a short sightseeing tour. The tour ends with visits to the Swartberg Canyon, the small village of De Rust and the waterfall at Meiringspoort. You return to Oudtshoorn in the late afternoon.

Sedgefield is the great unknown on the Garden Route for tourists from overseas. South Africans tend to spend their vacations here. The large Wild Oats Farmers Market takes place on Saturday mornings, where many local products from the surrounding farms and galleries are sold. The beaches are unique and invite you to relax. The hinterland is characterized by large lake landscapes and dense forests, ideal for beautiful hikes.

The luxurious accommodation Fynbos On Sea is located high up on the dunes in a 600-hectare reserve with typical fynbos vegetation. The view of the sea, the lagoons and the mountains in the hinterland is breathtaking. Wild animals such as zebras and antelopes are not rare guests. Long-haul flights to Southern Africa in Economy Class cost from EUR 900, while prices can be well over EUR 1000 in the high season. Flights in Premium Economy Class are available from 1500 EUR, in Business Class flights cost from 2500 EUR (per person for outward and return flights).
