ABOUT THIS TRIP
This is the classic of all South Africa tours and combines the main highlights of the south and the north. This tour can be started either from Johannesburg to Cape Town or vice versa and involves a lot of driving due to the lack of inland flights, but it takes in many of the country's different facets. You will experience fascinating landscapes on the Panorama Route and in the Karoo semi-desert, pristine wildlife in Kruger Park and Zululand, breathtaking mountain ranges in the Drakensberg, endless beaches on the Dolphin Coast and the Garden Route, seasonal whales on the south coast, culinary delights in the wine regions and one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Cape Town.
We are happy to change this tour itinerary or the rental car category according to your individual wishes. Please contact us for your personal offer. This tour can be started all year round, but we recommend focusing on the north from May to August. You should allow at least three weeks for this route. A four-wheel drive vehicle is not necessary for this route, but a car with a higher wheelbase will serve you well.

You will receive your rental car on arrival at Johannesburg Airport or at the agreed station. This region of the province of Mpumalanga captivates at the transition from the highveld to the lowveld with breathtaking landscapes in the untouched African bush. From here you can easily experience the highlights of the Panorama Route on a round trip: God's Window, Bourke's Luck Potholes, the Blyde River Canyon and the Three Rondavels, Berlin and Lone Creek Falls, the former gold mining town of Pilgrims Rest, the Mac Mac Pools and much more.
Abangane Guest Lodge is situated just outside Hazyview and is a good base from which to explore the Kruger Park and the attractions of the Panorama Route. The lodge offers peace and relaxation with a fantastic view of the untouched bush landscape of the Lowveld. Despite its location close to nature, restaurants and shopping facilities are only a few minutes' drive away. There is a subtropical garden, a pool, an outdoor terrace and a guest lounge. The five rooms have a private bathroom/WC, air conditioning, a minibar, a tea/coffee maker, a TV, a safe, a veranda with a view and free Wi-Fi. The Honeymoon Suite is more spacious and also offers a separate spa bath.

2X OVERNIGHT STAY WITH BREAKFAST
DAY 3 TO DAY 5 (APPROX. 110 KM):
HOEDSPRUIT
Your destination is the almost 50,000-hectare private Balule Game Reserve in Kruger Park. In contrast to the state-run national parks, only overnight guests have access to the private reserves. The small lodges have a very personal atmosphere. Specially trained rangers ensure a first-class nature experience. A private reserve is preferable for a short stay, as it is much easier to observe animals under expert guidance. Balule has had no fences to the national Kruger Park for many years, so the animals, including the Big Five, can move around freely.
The intimate Greenfire Game Lodge with only nine modern chalet suites is beautifully nestled in the unique bush landscape overlooking the Mohlabetsi Riverbed. The detached suites have a bathroom/WC, a safe, air-conditioning and a private veranda with seating and a view of the riverbed. The lodge offers a viewing deck with pool, a bar, a restaurant, a boma (traditional campfire dining area) and free Wi-Fi.
For each overnight stay, you will take part in two guided game drives in an open off-road vehicle (English-speaking, participation with other people), which take place in the afternoon before dinner and in the morning before breakfast. The game drives can also be swapped for guided bush walks.
GREENFIRE GAME LODGE (CHALET SUITE)
2X OVERNIGHT STAY WITH FULL BOARD AND 4 ACTIVITIES
DAY 5 TO DAY 6 (APPROX. 400 KM):
ESWATINI
The independent kingdom of Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) is an interesting facet of any trip through northern South Africa. Crossing this original and traditional country is very exciting in terms of landscape and culture. The center is the beautiful Ezulwini Valley with the two culturally interesting towns of Mbabane and Manzini on one side and the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary and Mantenga Nature Reserve on the other. Please note that the infrastructure and comfort cannot necessarily keep up with that of South Africa, and you will also have to allow for waiting times when crossing the border. You will be rewarded with an exciting and authentic piece of Africa.
Just a short drive from the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary and the capital Mbabane, this luxury boutique hotel is located in the middle of a beautiful botanical garden. Some interesting hiking trails start right outside the door. The 34 rooms all have a bathroom/WC, a TV/DVD player, a minibar, a safe, air conditioning, a tea/coffee maker and free WLAN. The Dove Nest Rooms are located in a beautiful villa and share a small private garden with seating. The Luxury Suites also offer a small lounge area and a dressing room. The Executive Suites also offer a spacious lounge area, a dressing room and a private veranda with seating. There is space for extra beds for children in these two room categories. The spacious Garden Villas have a separate bedroom, a lounge/dining area, a dressing room and a private veranda with seating. The resort offers several bars and restaurants, an outdoor terrace, a pool, as well as various sports and observation activities (some for a fee).

DAY 6 TO DAY 8 (APPROX. 320 KM):
ST. LUCIA
Your destination is the small town of St. Lucia in northern KwaZulu-Natal. This is the ideal starting point for excursions in the surrounding area. Take a boat trip to the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and discover hippos, crocodiles and unique birdlife. The Eastern Shore Section with Cape Vidal is a unique nature retreat with a real bush & beach feeling between the ocean and the evergreen hinterland, which is even home to three of the Big Five. The beautiful beach of St. Lucia with subtropical water temperatures invites you to swim all year round. An excursion to the famous Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park, the oldest and perhaps most beautiful game reserve in South Africa with its Big Five, is also an absolute highlight.
Your destination is the beautiful and centrally located Lodge Afrique in St. Lucia. The town center, beach, restaurants and stores are all within walking distance. The African-style lodge consists of eight detached chalets, all of which have a bathroom/WC, air conditioning, a fan, a minibar, a tea/coffee maker, a TV, a safe and a veranda with an outdoor shower. The lodge has a pool with sun deck, a small subtropical garden and a bar. Free WLAN is available.

With its rolling hills and open savannahs, Hluhluwe-Imfolozi is one of the most beautiful game parks in South Africa. Continue to the lively metropolis of Durban. Visit the colorful markets or simply relax on one of the many excellent city beaches on the warm Indian Ocean, which invites you to swim all year round. A visit to the new uShaka Marine World, a large aquarium and amusement park, is also worthwhile.
The upscale Cowrie Cove Guest House is located in the quiet suburb of Umhlanga, just a few steps from the Indian Ocean. Restaurants, cafés and shopping centers are just a few minutes' drive away. The twelve rooms have a bathroom/WC, air conditioning, a TV, a safe and a minibar. The guest house has a garden with pool, a guest lounge and private beach access.

There are numerous hiking trails of varying lengths and levels of difficulty. The surrounding area also has a lot to offer with the Giants Castle Game Reserve, the Spioenkop Dam Nature Reserve and the Battlefields Route.

Dusk is probably the most magical time in the mountains. On the way, you make a sundowner stop at a beautiful viewpoint.
This excursion starts at 4 p.m. and lasts around two hours. A sundowner drink and light snacks are included. The tour language is English and the tour can be conducted with additional people.

DAY 11 TO DAY 12:
BLOEMFONTEIN
You continue to Bloemfontein. This city is also known as the "City of Roses" due to its abundance of flowers and the annual Rose Festival. The name literally means "source of flowers" in Afrikaans. The Free State Botanical Garden is therefore the perfect place to go for flower lovers. In Sesotho and Pedi, on the other hand, the city is called Mangaung, which literally means "place of the cheetahs". The modern city with a population of over 400,000 offers some interesting historical buildings and museums as well as good shopping and foodie temples.
The modern Tredenham Boutique Hotel is located in the quiet surroundings of the Tredenham Valley, yet only a few minutes' drive from Bloemfontein's stores and tourist highlights such as the Botanical Gardens. All ten rooms have a bathroom/WC, air conditioning, a TV, a safe, a minibar, a tea/coffee maker and a balcony or terrace. The apartment also has a kitchenette. DAY 12 TO DAY 13 (APPROX. 370 KM):
GRAAFF-REINET
Graaff-Reinet is the fourth oldest town in South Africa and is rightly regarded as the jewel of the Little Karoo semi-desert. Thanks to the many Cape Dutch-style buildings, a visit to the town is like walking through a living museum. No other South African town has as many listed buildings as Graaff-Reinet. The imposing Groot Kerk, the "great church", which is modeled on the British Salisbury Cathedral, towers in the center. Just outside the city lies the Valley Of Desolation, a nature reserve with many bizarre rock formations. We recommend the 40-minute Nature Walk, which offers the best views of the Karoo, the valley and the city.
In the heart of Graff-Reinet, this charming boutique hotel impresses with a successful mix of Cape Dutch Victorian and typical Karoo architecture.
The building complex originally dates back to 1786 and has been extensively renovated. There are a total of 48 rooms and three pools spread around the spacious gardens. All rooms have a bathroom/WC, air conditioning, a minibar, a TV, a tea/coffee station, a safe and free Wi-Fi. The Bachelor Rooms are approximately 20 square meters in size. The Standard Rooms are approximately 30 square meters in size and also offer a desk. The Executive Rooms and Suites are up to 60 square meters in size and also offer a desk and a lounge area with seating furniture. The hotel has three pools, a fitness room, a spa area (for a fee), a restaurant, a bar, an outdoor terrace, a wine store and an art gallery.

OUDTSHOORN
Oudtshoorn is the jewel of the Little Karoo semi-desert and the largest town along Route 62. The C.P. Nel Museum in the town center explains the history of the town and its rise to become the "ostrich capital" of South Africa. A stop at one of the local ostrich farms is a must, where you can learn a lot about the largest birds in the world and admire the historic ostrich palaces. The Cango Caves, one of the most impressive stalactite caves in the world, are definitely worth a visit. The adventurous with the right vehicle can take a drive over the famous Swartberg Pass, but guided tours are also available. An insider tip is the Rust en Vrede waterfall, located to the east of the Cango Caves. Clear nights with little light pollution make for an impressive starry sky. On several farms, you can discover the cute meerkats early in the morning on guided tours. Some interesting wineries, such as the Karusa Estate, offer wine tastings.
De Zeekoe Farm is situated about 7 km outside of Oudtshoorn with a view of the surrounding mountain ranges. There are ostrich farms nearby and the Cango Caves are about a 30-minute drive away. Meerkat tours take place on the premises (optional with advance booking). The guest house offers a large garden with pool, a restaurant and a spa area (for a fee). The 21 rooms have a bathroom/WC, air conditioning, a minibar, a tea/coffee maker, a safe, a veranda and free WiFi. The Standard Rooms have a garden view. DAY 16 TO DAY 17 (APPROX. 130 KM):

The tour continues to the "whale capital" of South Africa, Hermanus. Here you have the best opportunities to watch whales from the coast between June and November. Of course, you can also take a boat trip out to sea to get even closer to the largest mammals on earth. But Hermanus also has a lot to offer outside the whale season in the South African summer. There are excellent beaches, great restaurants and the Fernkloof Nature Reserve, a unique nature reserve with typical fynbos vegetation and many hiking trails. Even winegrowing has now left its insider status here in the Coastal Region. Over 30 wineries have joined together to form various wine routes.
The Hermanus Boutique Guesthouse is located on the famous Cliff Path and within walking distance of the small town center with many restaurants and shopping opportunities. The guesthouse has a large lounge and breakfast area as well as a cozy courtyard with pool and sun loungers. BOAT-BASED WHALE WATCHING
OPTIONALLY BOOKABLE FROM 100 € PER PERSON
In the South African winter months from June to November, you have the best chance of spotting Southern Right Whales (right whales) and Humpback Whales (humpbacks) in Walker Bay near Hermanus. You can get within 50 meters of these gigantic marine mammals by boat. This is an experience that no one should miss, especially if the whales are not directly on the coast. If you are lucky, you may also spot dolphins, penguins, sharks and seals during the trip.
The trip takes about two hours and starts at the New Harbour in Hermanus (own arrival). The tour is in English and is conducted with additional people. A small refreshment is included in the price. We recommend booking this activity in advance, especially in the popular months of October and November, as places on the boat are limited and may be fully booked on site. This service can be booked for an additional charge.
DAY 17 TO DAY 18:

The scenically impressive mountain ranges offer unique hiking opportunities. The second oldest city in the country has a beautiful historic city center with many listed buildings in the Cape Dutch architectural style. Cafés, restaurants and boutiques invite you to stroll and linger. Thanks to the local university, Stellenbosch is a very lively and young city, despite its historical background.
You will spend the night at Wedgeview Country House in the middle of the Stellenbosch vineyards. Countless wine estates are right on the doorstep. The old town of Stellenbosch can be reached in around ten minutes by car. The spacious grounds consist of several buildings, a large garden and two pools, one of which is solar-heated.
