ABOUT THIS TRIP
This is the classic of all South Africa tours and combines the main highlights of the south and the north. This tour can be started either from Johannesburg to Cape Town or vice versa and involves a lot of driving due to the lack of inland flights, but it takes in many of the country's different facets. You will experience fascinating landscapes on the Panorama Route and in the Karoo semi-desert, pristine wildlife in Kruger Park and Zululand, breathtaking mountain ranges in the Drakensberg, endless beaches on the Dolphin Coast and the Garden Route, seasonal whales on the south coast, culinary delights in the wine regions and one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Cape Town.
We are happy to change this tour itinerary or the rental car category according to your individual wishes. Please contact us for your personal offer. This tour can be started all year round, but we recommend focusing on the north from May to August. You should allow at least three weeks for this route. A four-wheel drive vehicle is not necessary for this route, but a car with a higher wheelbase will serve you well.

DAY 3 TO DAY 5 (APPROX. 140 KM):
HOEDSPRUIT

Your destination is the private Karongwe Game Reserve in Kruger National Park, which is home to the Big Five as well as all other African wildlife. In contrast to the state-run Kruger Park, only overnight guests have access to the private reserves. These are therefore much better suited to a short stay for unique game viewing. The small lodges also offer a very personal atmosphere. Specially trained rangers ensure a first-class nature experience.
The spacious Karongwe River Lodge on the Makhutsi River consists of only eleven detached chalet suites, all with fantastic views over the African bush and the northern foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains. The spacious chalets offer a bathroom/WC, tea/coffee making facilities, a minibar, air conditioning, mosquito nets over the bed, a safe and a private veranda with a view. There is space for an extra bed for children in the Luxury Suites. The Family Suites offer an additional bedroom for up to three more people. The Executive Suites are even more spacious and the Presidential Suites have their own plunge pool on the veranda. The lodge has a pool, a boma (traditional campfire dining area), a shelter overlooking a waterhole, a bar, a restaurant and a large outdoor deck overlooking the river. Free WLAN is available.
For each overnight stay you take part in two guided game drives in an open off-road vehicle (English-speaking, participation with other people), which take place in the afternoon before dinner and in the morning before breakfast.

DAY 5 TO DAY 6 (APPROX. 400 KM):
ESWATINI

The independent kingdom of Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) is an interesting facet of any trip through northern South Africa. Crossing this original and traditional country is very exciting in terms of landscape and culture. The center is the beautiful Ezulwini Valley with the two culturally interesting towns of Mbabane and Manzini on one side and the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary and Mantenga Nature Reserve on the other. Please note that the infrastructure and comfort cannot necessarily keep up with that of South Africa, and you will also have to allow for waiting times when crossing the border. You will be rewarded with an exciting and authentic piece of Africa.
Just a short drive from the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary and the capital Mbabane, this luxury boutique hotel is located in the middle of a beautiful botanical garden. Some interesting hiking trails start right outside the door. The 34 rooms all have a bathroom/WC, a TV/DVD player, a minibar, a safe, air conditioning, a tea/coffee maker and free WLAN. The Dove Nest Rooms are located in a beautiful villa and share a small private garden with seating. The Luxury Suites also offer a small lounge area and a dressing room. The Executive Suites also offer a spacious lounge area, a dressing room and a private veranda with seating. There is space for extra beds for children in these two room categories. The spacious Garden Villas have a separate bedroom, a lounge/dining area, a dressing room and a private veranda with seating. The Eastern Shore Section with Cape Vidal is a unique nature retreat with a real bush & beach feeling between the ocean and the evergreen hinterland, which is even home to three of the Big Five. The beautiful beach of St. Lucia with subtropical water temperatures invites you to swim all year round. An excursion to the famous Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park, the oldest and perhaps most beautiful game reserve in South Africa with its Big Five, is also an absolute highlight.
The modern Serene Estate Boutique Guest House is located on the outskirts of St. Lucia, overlooking the subtropical landscape of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. The town center with restaurants and stores as well as the beach are within walking distance. The guest house impresses with its minimalist architecture, which nevertheless blends into the landscape. You continue to Bloemfontein. This city is also known as the "City of Roses" due to its abundance of flowers and the annual Rose Festival. The name literally means "source of flowers" in Afrikaans. The Free State Botanical Garden is therefore the perfect place to go for flower lovers. In Sesotho and Pedi, on the other hand, the city is called Mangaung, which literally means "place of the cheetahs". The modern city with a population of over 400,000 offers some interesting historical buildings and museums as well as good shopping and foodie temples.
The modern Tredenham Boutique Hotel is located in the quiet surroundings of the Tredenham Valley, yet only a few minutes' drive from Bloemfontein's stores and tourist highlights such as the Botanical Gardens. DAY 12 TO DAY 13 (APPROX. 440 KM):
GRAAFF-REINET

Graaff-Reinet is the fourth oldest town in South Africa and is rightly regarded as the jewel of the Little Karoo semi-desert. Thanks to the many Cape Dutch-style buildings, a visit to the town is like walking through a living museum. No other South African town has as many listed buildings as Graaff-Reinet. The imposing Groot Kerk, the "great church", which is modeled on the British Salisbury Cathedral, towers in the center. Just outside the city lies the Valley Of Desolation, a nature reserve with many bizarre rock formations. We recommend the 40-minute Nature Walk, which offers the best views of the Karoo, the valley and the city.
In the heart of Graff-Reinet, this charming boutique hotel impresses with a successful mix of Cape Dutch Victorian and typical Karoo architecture.
The building complex originally dates back to 1786 and has been extensively renovated. There are a total of 48 rooms and three pools spread around the spacious gardens. All rooms have a bathroom/WC, air conditioning, a minibar, a TV, a tea/coffee station, a safe and free Wi-Fi. The Bachelor Rooms are approximately 20 square meters in size. The Standard Rooms are approximately 30 square meters in size and also offer a desk. The Executive Rooms and Suites are up to 60 square meters in size and also offer a desk and a lounge area with seating furniture. The hotel has three pools, a fitness room, a spa area (for a fee), a restaurant, a bar, an outdoor terrace, a wine store and an art gallery.

OUDTSHOORN

Oudtshoorn is the jewel of the Little Karoo semi-desert and the largest town along Route 62. A stop at one of the local ostrich farms is a must, where you will learn a lot about the largest and flightless birds in the world. The Cango Caves, a huge stalactite cave landscape that is one of the most impressive in the world, are definitely worth a visit. Adventure-seekers with the right vehicle can take a drive over the famous Swartberg Pass, but guided tours are also available. An insider tip is the Rust en Vrede waterfall, located east of the Cango Caves. Clear nights with little light pollution make for an impressive starry sky, and professional stargazers offer appropriate observation activities. The cute meerkats can be spotted early in the morning on several farms. Some interesting wineries, such as the Karusa Estate, offer wine tastings.
Located at the foot of the mighty Swartberg Mountains in the beautiful Schoemanshoek Valley, halfway between Oudtshoorn and the Cango Caves, Berluda Farmhouse is part of a working ostrich farm. On site, you can take part in a private farm tour or an early morning tour to see the meerkats for an extra charge. For overnight guests, there are two pools, a garden, a guest lounge, a restaurant and free Wi-Fi. The 28 rooms and cottages all have a bathroom/WC, air conditioning, tea/coffee making facilities, a minibar, a TV and a veranda. The Luxury Farmhouse Rooms are located in the main building. The Luxury Mountain Manor Rooms are located about 300 meters away in separate parts of the building. DAY 16 TO DAY 17 (APPROX. 410 KM):
HERMANUS

The tour continues to the "whale capital" of South Africa, Hermanus. Here you have the best opportunities to watch whales from the coast between June and November. Of course, you can also take a boat trip out to sea to get even closer to the largest mammals on earth. But Hermanus also has a lot to offer outside the whale season in the South African summer. There are excellent beaches, great restaurants and the Fernkloof Nature Reserve, a unique nature reserve with typical fynbos vegetation and many hiking trails. Even winegrowing has now left its insider status here in the Coastal Region. Over 30 wineries have joined together to form various wine routes.
Selkirk House is a personally run upmarket guest house situated on the hillside just below the Fernkloof Nature Reserve in Hermanus. The stunning view of Walker Bay is picturesquely framed by the mountainous landscape inland. The town center is just a few minutes' drive away. The five modern and individually furnished rooms have a bathroom/WC, air conditioning, a TV, a safe, a tea/coffee station, a minibar and a balcony or veranda. The guest house offers a pool, a garden with sun deck, two guest lounges, a wine cellar and free WLAN.
In the whale season from June to November, we recommend an optional extra night in Hermanus.

BOAT-BASED WHALE WATCHING
OPTIONALLY BOOKABLE FROM 110 € PER PERSON

In the South African winter months from June to November, you have the best chance of spotting Southern Right Whales (right whales) and Humpback Whales (humpbacks) in Walker Bay near Hermanus. You can get within 50 meters of these gigantic marine mammals by boat. This is an experience that no one should miss, especially if the whales are not directly on the coast. If you are lucky, you may also spot dolphins, penguins, sharks and seals during the trip.
The trip takes about two hours and starts at the New Harbour in Hermanus (own arrival). The tour is in English and is conducted with additional people. A small refreshment is included in the price. We recommend booking this activity in advance, especially in the popular months of October and November, as places on the boat are limited and may be fully booked on site. DAY 17 TO DAY 18 (APPROX. 100 KM):

The scenically impressive mountain ranges offer unique hiking opportunities.
