Fancy a little more? On this leisurely, nearly four-week round-trip tour, you’ll discover the many highlights of the Western Cape and Eastern Cape provinces. In addition to the classics like the wine regions, Oudtshoorn, Tsitsikamma National Park, the Garden Route, and Cape Town, the itinerary also includes some exciting hidden gems off the beaten path, such as the West Coast, the Cederberg Mountains, the Amatola Mountains, the Wild Coast, and Cape Agulhas. You won’t miss the Big Five either in a malaria-free game reserve at Addo Elephant Park. We are happy to adjust this itinerary or the rental car category based on your individual preferences. DAY 1 TO DAY 2 (APPROX. 150 KM):

LANGEBAAN

Upon arrival at Cape Town Airport or the agreed-upon pickup location, you will receive your rental car. You will drive to Langebaan on the country’s west coast. This former fishing village, which now offers a variety of tourist attractions and water sports, is located very close to the West Coast National Park, which is ideal for a day trip. During the wildflower season in the South African spring (August, September), entire stretches of land look like colorful tapestries. With a little luck, you can also spot whales here from June through November. But even outside the wildflower and whale seasons, the area offers plenty of activities such as hiking or water sports.

The Farmhouse Hotel consists of a renovated former farmhouse in the Cape Dutch architectural style, along with two outbuildings. The two-story complex is ideally located just 300 meters from the sea and is surrounded by a lovely garden. All the attractions of the small town of Langebaan are within walking distance. The entrance to the West Coast National Park is just a few minutes’ drive away. You continue to the Ceder Mountains. In addition to countless interesting mountain formations and beautiful valleys, there are also an impressive number of rock paintings by the San, the indigenous people of South Africa. A paradise for hiking enthusiasts. In addition, the famous rooibos tea is harvested in the Cederberg, which only grows here in a small area. You have the opportunity to try different types of tea during a tasting. If you wish, you can also take part in a guided tour of the plantation. Outside the village is the Ramskop Nature Reserve with its 200 species of wild flowers (best time June to October). You can discover the beautiful landscape on a walk.

Stellenbosch is the heart of South African wine production. Countless wine estates are lined up next to each other, and you can get to know South Africa's fine wines at one or two wine tastings. The scenically impressive mountain ranges offer unique hiking opportunities. The second oldest city in the country has a beautiful historic city center with many listed buildings in the Cape Dutch architectural style. Cafés, restaurants and boutiques invite you to stroll and linger. Thanks to the local university, Stellenbosch is a very lively and young city, despite its historical background.

You will stay in the Villa Grande Guest House, an elegant and lovingly renovated villa from the 1920s, which is centrally but quietly situated in a cul-de-sac in Stellenbosch. Restaurants, cafes, boutiques, the botanical gardens and the historic town center are all within walking distance. Countless wine estates can be reached in less than 15 minutes by car. The 12 rooms have a bathroom/WC, a TV, air conditioning, a tea/coffee maker, a safe, hairdryer and free WiFi. The Deluxe Rooms are more spacious than the Standard Rooms. DAY 5: STELLENBOSCH

You will be picked up from your accommodation in the morning. With a wine expert, you will set off on a day trip to the Stellenbosch wine regions and stop at hand-picked wine estates to get to know the region's outstanding fine wines.

The focus of this day tour is on small and beautifully situated boutique wineries away from the mass tourism of the usual wine tours. In addition to the region's famous red and white wines, you will also taste the excellent sparkling wines, some of which are produced using the Champagne method.

The tour can vary depending on the day of the week and time of year. Depending on the time of year, you will visit around three wineries to gain a differentiated insight into local wine production. As a rule, there is also a cellar tour (not on certain days of the week or public holidays). In between, you will stop at a good restaurant for lunch (optional). Depending on the time and route, a short flying visit to the historic center of Stellenbosch is also possible. You will be dropped off at your accommodation again in the afternoon.

DAY 6 TO DAY 8 (APPROX. 410 KM):

OUDTSHOORN

Oudtshoorn is the jewel of the Little Karoo semi-desert and the largest town along Route 62. A stop at one of the local ostrich farms is a must, where you will learn a lot about the largest and flightless birds in the world. The Cango Caves, a huge stalactite cave landscape that is one of the most impressive in the world, are definitely worth a visit. Adventure-seekers with the right vehicle can take a drive over the famous Swartberg Pass, but guided tours are also available. An insider tip is the Rust en Vrede waterfall, located east of the Cango Caves. Clear nights with little light pollution make for an impressive starry sky, and professional stargazers offer appropriate observation activities. The cute meerkats can be spotted early in the morning on several farms. Some interesting wineries, such as the Karusa Estate, offer wine tastings.

Located at the foot of the mighty Swartberg Mountains in the beautiful Schoemanshoek Valley, halfway between Oudtshoorn and the Cango Caves, Berluda Farmhouse is part of a working ostrich farm. On site, you can take part in a private farm tour or an early morning tour to see the meerkats for an extra charge. For overnight guests, there are two pools, a garden, a guest lounge, a restaurant and free Wi-Fi. The 28 rooms and cottages all have a bathroom/WC, air conditioning, tea/coffee making facilities, a minibar, a TV and a veranda. The Luxury Farmhouse Rooms are located in the main building. SWARTBERG TOUR & LUNCH

Experience the beauty of the Swartberg Mountain Range with 360° views over the Little and Great Karoo. This is the ideal activity for all nature lovers, where you will learn a lot about the special flora and fauna of the region. As you drive up the spectacular Swartberg Pass, you will stop to take photos and enjoy the scenery. You have the opportunity to go on a 30-minute hike or mountain bike ride (bike and equipment optional at an extra charge). Afterwards, a typical Karoo lunch awaits you with lamb, ostrich, boerewors (South African sausage), various salads and vegetables as well as traditional roosterkoek (bread baked on coal).

The tour language is English. Additional people can take part in this tour. The approximately three-hour tour starts at 10:30 (own arrival at the starting point on the R328) and ends there again at around 13:30. DAY 8: OUDTSHOORN

OSTRICH & MEERKAT TOUR

You go in search of the meerkats of the Little Karoo. Together with an experienced tour guide, you make your way to the meerkats' dens at sunrise and observe the cute predators as they start the day. The excursion starts early in the morning before breakfast and lasts around two to three hours. The tour is conducted in English and additional people can join in.

After breakfast, you will take part in a guided tour of the ostriches on Berluda Farm. Here you will learn a lot about the largest flightless birds in the world and about farm life in the Klein Karoo in general. The tour takes about one to two hours. The tour language is English, additional people can take part.

DAY 8 TO DAY 10 (APPROX. 330 KM):

GRAAFF-REINET

Graaff-Reinet is one of South Africa’s oldest towns and is considered the jewel of the Karoo semi-desert. Thanks to its many buildings in the Cape Dutch architectural style, a visit to the town feels like a stroll through a living museum. No other South African town has as many listed buildings as Graaff-Reinet. In the center stands the imposing Groot Kerk, the “Great Church,” modeled after Salisbury Cathedral in the UK. The town is almost entirely surrounded by Camdeboo National Park, which offers hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities and whose highlight is the bizarre rock formation of the “Valley of Desolation”—especially at sunset.

Sundays Karoo Guesthouse is centrally located in Graaff-Reinet. Within walking distance you will find cafés, restaurants, stores, museums and the famous Groot Kerk church. The Valley Of Desolation can be reached in about 20 minutes by car. The guest house has a swimming pool, a garden, a bar, a guest lounge, a cozy outdoor terrace and free Wi-Fi. DAY 9: GRAAFF-REINET

Your English-speaking guide will pick you up at your accommodation in the late afternoon. You will set off on a sundowner tour on which you can discover the breathtakingly beautiful geological formation of the Valley Of Desolation. The formation with its spectacular 120-metre-high columns of ancient volcanic rock, which watch over the endless, parched plains of Camdeboo, is impressive and glows in the most beautiful colors, especially at sunset. There is also a panoramic view over Graaff-Reinet. With a bit of luck, you may even spot various animals such as kudus, Cape Mountain zebras, mountain redbucks and the majestic Verraux eagle with its two-meter wingspan.

DAY 10 TO DAY 11 (APPROX. 140 KM):

CRADOCK

You drive through the Karoo semi-desert. The small town of Cradock is an ideal base from which to explore the Mountain Zebra National Park. Several herds of the rare mountain zebra still live here, as well as other species of antelope, buffalo and rhino. The Mountain Zebra National Park is one of the most scenic parks in South Africa. The town of Cradock also offers historic buildings from the Victorian era as well as smaller museums. The dry semi-desert climate often makes for spectacular sunsets and ideal stargazing opportunities.

You will spend the night in the center of the small town of Cradock, where an entire street of Victorian buildings, including a historic hotel, has been combined to form the best accommodation in the town on Market Street. There are 16 hotel rooms in Victoria Manor and 30 Karoo Cottages (Tuishuise) along Market Street. The hotel rooms have bath/WC, air conditioning, TV and free WLAN. The cottages have bath/WC, TV and kitchenette. The family cottages consist of two bedrooms and two bathrooms. DAY 11 TO DAY 13 (APPROX. 200 KM):

Hogsback in the Amatola Mountains is still an insider tip in South Africa and is mainly visited by South Africans. Dense forests cover the landscape and the mountains rise up to 2000 meters. It can snow in the South African winter, but in summer it is always a few degrees cooler than on the hot coast. The small town thrives on its outdoor activities. Hikes to various waterfalls and mountain peaks are possible, and mountain biking, quad biking and abseiling are also on offer. Hogsback is also home to some esoteric quirks such as an Eco Shrine and an eleven-circle labyrinth, both with breathtaking views of the valley below.

Even after 140 years, the historic Hogsback Inn is still the first address for travelers in the area. While the rooms used to resemble simple shelters and you had to go to the nearby river to bathe, today the charming country hotel offers everything you would expect from comfortable accommodation. The Riverside Suites are spacious and modern with a bathroom/WC, a minibar, a flat-screen TV, a fireplace, a tea/coffee maker and a veranda overlooking a small river. Just half an hour north of East London lies the small village of Chintsa, a paradise nestled in the beautiful countryside at the southern beginning and end of the Wild Coast. Here you can slow down wonderfully in this pristine piece of Africa. Let yourself be enchanted by the dreamlike landscape, the evergreen nature and the endless sandy beaches.

You will spend the night at Crawfords Beach Lodge right by the sea with spectacular views. You can reach the long, fine sandy beach of Chintsa in just a few minutes via a small path. The 56 rooms are spread over the grounds in a two-storey design and all have a bathroom/WC, TV, fan, minibar, safe, balcony or terrace and free Wi-Fi. The Honeymoon Suite is the largest room and has a viewing deck with direct sea views. The Front Row Seaview Rooms are located in a building in the first row with a direct sea view. The private Amakhala Game Reserve is located near the Addo Elephant Park in a malaria-free environment. The reserve is home to the Big Five, i.e. lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo and rhinos, as well as many other African wild animals. The 8500-hectare reserve on the Bushmans River offers a beautiful landscape typical of the Eastern Cape. In contrast to the state-run Addo Elephant Park, only overnight guests have access to the private reserves. These are therefore much better suited for a short stay for unique game viewing. The small lodges also offer a very personal atmosphere. Specially trained rangers ensure a first-class nature experience.

In the heart of the Amakhala Game Reserve lies Woodbury Tented Camp, an intimate and peaceful experience in typical Eastern Cape bushveld with great views of the surrounding area. Ten comfortable tented suites built on raised wooden platforms offer a unique "Out Of Africa" feeling. The suites have a fixed bed, a shower/WC, heating and a fan, a tea/coffee maker, a safe and a private veranda. The lodge offers a pool with sun loungers, a central area with a viewing deck, a lounge with an outdoor terrace and free WiFi.

DAY 17 TO DAY 19 (APPROX. 250 KM):

TSITSIKAMMA

The Tsitsikamma National Park is the largest contiguous forest area in South Africa and is ideal for hiking or relaxing. The hiking trails always offer fantastic views of the dense forests and the endless sea. At the Storms River Restcamp in the eastern part of the park, you can take short boat trips on the river of the same name. The famous Suspension Bridge, a suspension bridge over the river, is also located here. Various long hiking trails start directly at the camp. The western part, the Natures Valley, also offers beautiful nature and the best hiking opportunities. With a bit of luck, you can even spot whales (seasonal) and dolphins from land.

You will spend the night in a cozy guest house in the small village of Storms River in the Tsitsikamma National Park. You will find cafés, restaurants and stores within walking distance. The famous Big Tree, an 800-year-old yellowwood tree almost 40 meters high and with a trunk circumference of nine meters, is about a 20-minute walk away. The Storms River Restcamp is about 15 minutes' drive away. The guest house offers a garden with pool and sun deck, a fireplace lounge, a bar and free Wi-Fi. The eight rooms have a bathroom/WC, a tea/coffee maker, air conditioning, a fan, a TV, a safe, a minibar and a veranda or balcony. Knysna, with its striking lagoon, is the center of the Garden Route and offers a wide range of daytime activities. The dense forests in the hinterland or the beautiful coastal sections are ideal for hiking, the nearby beaches for swimming and relaxing. Boat trips are offered on the lagoon. From June to November, you may be lucky enough to spot whales. The town itself and the small waterfront with its cafés, stores and boutiques also invite you to stroll and linger.

You will stay in the historic and lovingly restored Parkes Manor Guest House, a stately home in a 12000 square meter park-like garden overlooking the lagoon. The waterfront or the center of Knysna can be reached in about 15 minutes on foot or a few minutes by car. The nine individually furnished suites all have a shower/WC with separate bathtub, a TV, tea/coffee making facilities, air conditioning, a minibar and a safe. The Cozy Suite is located on the first floor and has a private courtyard without a view. The Standard Suites are located on the first floor at the rear of the building and have a balcony. The Lagoon View Suites are also located on the first floor and have a balcony with a view over the garden and the lagoon. The spacious Grand Suite is located on the first floor and has a four-poster bed, a double shower in the bathroom and a private courtyard without a view. The picturesque Knysna Lagoon, with its narrow opening to the Indian Ocean, is one of the highlights of the Garden Route. Only a few boats are permitted to pass through the two “heads” out into the open sea. Aboard the catamaran Bella Luna, you’ll explore both the lagoon and the cliffs that line its shores. Along the way, with a little luck, you can spot waterfowl, seals, dolphins, and, seasonally, whales. The special highlight is the sunset, which bathes the scenery in shimmering shades of red and orange.

The Bella Luna is a modern, 12-meter luxury catamaran that offers all the amenities you would expect from a catamaran of this class. Its features include spacious sun decks, an indoor lounge area, a covered outdoor seating area, a fully stocked bar, and a guest restroom.

The approximately 120-minute boat tour is conducted in English, is shared with other passengers, and departs from the Sirocco Jetty on Thesen Island (you must make your own way there). A glass of sparkling wine is included in the price. Shoes are not permitted on the boat; they can be left at the jetty before boarding. Depending on weather conditions, the trip out to the open sea may not be possible; in that case, the boat will sail only on the lagoon.

DAY 20: KNYSNA

CULTURE AND NATURE EXPERIENCE

You will take part in the following two activities during your stay in Knysna:

You take part in a guided hike in the Robberg Nature Reserve, which is considered the most spectacular coastal hiking area on the entire Garden Route. You will always have great views of the sea and, with a bit of luck, you may spot seals, dolphins, sharks or even whales (seasonal). You will embark on a moderate circular walk lasting around two and a half hours and have the opportunity to enjoy the fantastic surroundings time and again (privately guided, pick-up from your accommodation, sturdy shoes, appropriate clothing and sun protection).

Together with a qualified guide and a local resident, you will take a guided tour into the township of Knysna. Here you will learn a lot about the history of the black and colored inhabitants of South Africa, from the times of apartheid to the present day. The tour itinerary varies depending on the day of the week and time of day. For example, the program may include short visits to small stores, a school, a kindergarten, a shebeen (local pub) or the library. You will get to know the people and their culture and will certainly leave one or two preconceptions behind you (with other people, pick-up at your accommodation).

DAY 21 TO DAY 23 (APPROX. 360 KM):

ARNISTON

Arniston is a small town very close to Cape Agulhas, the southernmost point of Africa. Nature lovers can enjoy excursions to the De Mond or De Hoop nature reserves. From June to November, you have excellent whale watching opportunities here on the coast. The snow-white beaches with their turquoise waters are among the most beautiful in the Western Cape. Arniston is also home to the famous Waenhuiskrans Cave, which can only be entered at low tide.

Your destination is the Arniston Hotel, which is located directly on the small fishing harbor. The restaurant offers first-class South African cuisine and is famous for its seafood dishes. The 31 rooms have a bathroom/WC, a TV, a minibar, a tea/coffee maker, a safe and a balcony. The Pool Facing Rooms are approximately 30 square meters in size and face the inner courtyard with pool. The Superior Seafacing Rooms are about 40 square meters in size with a unique sea view from the private balcony. Welcome to the Mother City. Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. To get an overview, your first excursion should be to Table Mountain. A drive along Chapmans Peak Drive, an impressive coastal road that leads past the penguin colony at Boulders Beach to the Cape of Good Hope, is also a must. The ferries to the former prison island of Robben Island also depart from here. On weekdays, you can explore the city center, the colourful Bo-Kaap district and the Company's Garden on foot without hesitation.

This comfortable Victorian villa is located in the quiet suburb of Oranjezicht below Table Mountain with a great view of the city and the harbor. The city center and the Table Mountain cable car station are just a few minutes' drive away. The beaches of Camps Bay and Clifton as well as the V&A Waterfront can be reached in about 15 minutes by car. There are several small cafés and restaurants within walking distance. The 13 rooms have a bathroom/WC, a minibar, air conditioning, a TV, a safe and a tea/coffee maker. The guest house has a large pool with sun deck, a breakfast room, a lounge with bar and free Wi-Fi.

You will take part in an approximately three-hour guided sunset hike up the famous Lions Head. During the ascent, you will be treated to spectacular views of the city, Table Mountain and the Atlantic suburbs. Once at the top, enjoy the 360° view over Cape Town with snacks and a glass of sparkling wine, including a spectacular sunset.

This hike is in English and is carried out with other people. You will be picked up and dropped off at your accommodation. The price includes snacks, drinking water and a glass of sparkling wine. Please remember to wear appropriate clothing for the weather, sturdy shoes, sun protection and torches/headlamps for the descent in the dark. This hike is considered moderate to challenging.
