CHAUFFEUR-DRIVEN TOUR: CLASSIC GARDEN ROUTE WITH DRIVER

Discover the highlights of the Garden Route on a budget-friendly tour without missing out on what makes this region of South Africa so special. The Mother City, Cape Town, is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The wine regions are home to world-class wineries and restaurants. Depending on the season, you can spot whales near Hermanus. The semi-arid Little Karoo, home to the “ostrich capital” of Oudtshoorn, offers stunning scenic highlights. Near Knysna, you’ll find beautiful stretches of coastline, and the Tsitsikamma National Park features pristine forests. Last but not least, you’ll embark on a malaria-free safari in a private Big Five game reserve at Addo Elephant Park.

You don’t want to drive yourself, but a small-group tour doesn’t have a suitable departure date, and you can do without the full-service support of a private tour guide throughout the trip? Then our English-speaking chauffeur-driven tours are the perfect—and more affordable—alternative to a privately guided tour. Your private chauffeur will take you from place to place, where you’ll then participate in guided daily activities. All chauffeur-driven tours can start any day and can be customized to your preferences in advance.

DAY 1 THROUGH DAY 4: CAPE TOWN

Welcome to the Mother City. Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. To get an overview, your first excursion should be to Table Mountain. A drive along Chapmans Peak Drive, an impressive coastal road that leads past the penguin colony at Boulders Beach to the Cape of Good Hope, is also a must. On the way, you can visit the oldest wine estates on the Cape in Constantia. The V&A Waterfront is inviting with its countless stores and restaurants. The ferries to the former prison island of Robben Island also depart from here. On weekdays, you can explore the city center, the colourful Bo-Kaap district and the Company's Garden on foot without hesitation.

You will stay at Head South Lodge, a small owner-managed boutique hotel in Green Point, just a few minutes' walk from the beach promenade, Green Point Park and various restaurants. The V&A Waterfront can be reached in about five minutes by car. The 22 rooms have a bathroom/WC, a TV, air conditioning, a safe and free WLAN. Continue to the Cape of Good Hope National Park with the Cape of Good Hope and its typical Cape flora and fauna (admission included). DAY 4 THROUGH DAY 5: STELLENBOSCH

Stellenbosch is the heart of South African wine production. Countless wine estates are lined up next to each other, and you can get to know South Africa's fine wines at one or two wine tastings. The scenically impressive mountain ranges offer unique hiking opportunities. The second oldest city in the country has a beautiful historic city center with many listed buildings in the Cape Dutch architectural style. Cafés, restaurants and boutiques invite you to stroll and linger. Thanks to the local university, Stellenbosch is a very lively and young city, despite its historical background.

Located in the heart of Stellenbosch’s historic city center, right on the famous Dorp Street, is the comfortable Stellenbosch Hotel, which has been extensively renovated behind its historic, protected facade. Many shops, cafés, and restaurants are within walking distance. Countless wineries are about a 15-minute drive away. The 37 rooms feature a bathroom with a toilet, air conditioning, a safe, a TV, and a minibar. The different room categories vary mainly in terms of room size. The hotel offers a cozy courtyard, a restaurant, a lounge, and free Wi-Fi.

DAY 4: AFTERNOON PRIVATE STELLENBOSCH WINE TOUR

Your private wine expert will pick you up at your accommodations in the early afternoon, and you’ll set off on a half-day excursion to the wine regions of Stellenbosch. You’ll stop at carefully selected wineries to sample the region’s exceptional wines.

This tour focuses on small, picturesque boutique wineries located away from the crowds of typical wine tours. In addition to the region’s famous red and white wines, you’ll also sample the excellent sparkling wines, some of which are produced using the Champagne method.

The tour itinerary may vary depending on the day of the week and the season. You’ll visit two wineries to get a good insight into local wine production. Time permitting, there will also be a cellar tour (not available on certain weekdays or holidays). After about three to four hours, you’ll be dropped off back at your lodging.

The tour is conducted in English. No other participants are joining this tour. The cost of wine tastings is included in the price. However, the cost of food and other beverages is not included in the price.

DAY 5 TO DAY 6: HERMANUS

The tour continues to the "whale capital" of South Africa, Hermanus. Here you have the best opportunities to watch whales from the coast between June and November. Of course, you can also take a boat trip out to sea to get even closer to the largest mammals on earth. But Hermanus also has a lot to offer outside the whale season in the South African summer. There are excellent beaches, great restaurants and the Fernkloof Nature Reserve, a unique nature reserve with typical fynbos vegetation and many hiking trails. Even winegrowing has now left its insider status here in the Coastal Region. Over 30 wineries have joined together to form various wine routes.

Thanks to its prime location, the Windsor Hotel offers a great view of the ocean. It’s just a few minutes’ walk along the famous Cliff Path to the small town center, which is home to many shops, cafés, and restaurants. The 70 rooms feature a bathroom with a toilet, a safe, a TV, tea and coffee-making facilities, and free Wi-Fi. The hotel has a breakfast area and a bar.

DAY 5: BOAT-BASED WHALE WATCHING, INCLUDING PICKUP

OPTIONALLY BOOKABLE FROM 145 € PER PERSON

In the South African winter months from June to November, you have the best chance of spotting Southern Right Whales (right whales) and Humpback Whales (humpbacks) in Walker Bay near Hermanus. You can get within 50 meters of these gigantic marine mammals by boat. This is an experience that no one should miss, especially if the whales are not directly on the coast. If you are lucky, you may also spot dolphins, penguins, sharks and seals during the trip.

The trip takes about two hours and starts at New Harbour in Hermanus. You will be picked up at your accommodation in good time by transfer and then dropped off there again. The tour is in English and is conducted with additional people. A small refreshment is included in the price. We recommend booking this activity in advance, especially in the popular months of October and November, as places on the boat are limited and may be fully booked on site. If the trip has to be canceled at short notice due to weather conditions, we will refund the price after your trip.

This service can be booked for an additional charge.

DAY 6: ONE-WAY TRANSFER TO OUDTSHOORN

In the case of a transfer from your accommodation, you will be picked up at the entrance of your guesthouse, lodge or hotel at the agreed time. You will be driven to your destination and dropped off at your accommodation or at the airport.

The transfer company has all the necessary licenses and insurance for its vehicles and drivers to guarantee legal passenger transportation (no Uber or similar). For long-distance transfers, toilet and catering stops are made as required (catering not included in the price).

DAY 6 TO DAY 7: OUDTSHOORN

Oudtshoorn is the jewel of the Little Karoo semi-desert and the largest town along Route 62. The C.P. Nel Museum in the town center explains the history of the town and its rise to become the "ostrich capital" of South Africa. A stop at one of the local ostrich farms is a must, where you can learn a lot about the largest and flightless birds in the world and admire the historic ostrich palaces. The Cango Caves, a huge stalactite cave landscape that is one of the most impressive in the world, are definitely worth a visit. Adventure-seekers with the right vehicle can take a drive over the famous Swartberg Pass, but guided tours are also available. An insider tip is the Rust en Vrede waterfall, located east of the Cango Caves. Clear nights with little light pollution make for an impressive starry sky, and professional stargazers offer appropriate evening observation activities. On several farms, the cute meerkats can be spotted early in the morning on guided tours. Some interesting wineries, such as the Karusa Estate, offer wine tastings.

You will stay at Hlangana Lodge, a renovated Victorian property in a quiet side street near the city center. Various ostrich farms and the Cango Caves are about a 30-minute drive away. The 23 modern rooms have a bathroom/WC, air conditioning, TV, minibar, tea/coffee making facilities, safe, and terrace. The Superior Rooms are more spacious than the Standard Rooms. The Deluxe Rooms also have an outdoor shower. The Honeymoon Suite also has a lounge area and a private courtyard. The accommodation offers a lounge, a bar, a garden with a pool, a fitness room, and free Wi-Fi.

DAY 7: OUDTSHOORN TO KNYSNA PRIVATE DAY TOUR

You will be picked up from your accommodation in Oudtshoorn in the morning. The first stop on the itinerary is a local ostrich farm. Oudtshoorn is the ostrich capital of South Africa. Here you will learn a lot about the breeding of the world's largest flightless birds.

Continue to the Karusa Wine Estate, where you can taste up to five of the locally produced wines. For those less interested in wine, the estate also has its own brewery with interesting craft beers (all tastings optional). Afterwards, you have the opportunity to have lunch at the winery (lunch optional). The winery is closed on Sundays and public holidays, when an alternative program takes place.

Your next stop is the Cango Caves, a unique stalactite cave landscape located just outside Oudtshoorn in the idyllic Schoemanshoek Valley. Here you embark on a fairly easy guided tour through huge caves and narrow passages (no climbing or crawling).

You leave the dry semi-desert and continue along the green coast to Wilderness, where you stop briefly to take photos on the beautiful beach. The journey continues along the beautiful coastline of Wilderness and Sedgefield with their stunning lake landscapes and dense forests in the hinterland. In the late afternoon, you will be dropped off at your accommodation in Knysna.

The tour language is English, no other people take part. The entrance fees for the Cango Caves and the ostrich farm are included in the tour price. The wine or beer tasting and lunch are not included in the tour price.

DAY 7 THROUGH DAY 9: KNYSNA

You continue to the small town of Knysna with its famous lagoon, which is only connected to the Indian Ocean by a small strait. A boat trip on the lagoon is a real highlight. Knysna is the center of the Garden Route and offers many opportunities for daytime activities. The dense forests in the hinterland or the beautiful coastal sections are ideal for hiking, the nearby beaches for swimming and relaxing. From June to November, you may be lucky enough to spot whales. The town itself and the small waterfront with its cafés, stores and boutiques also invite you to stroll and linger.

The Knysna Log-Inn consists of two buildings facing each other, constructed in a rustic wooden style, and is centrally located on Gray Street. Several shopping centers, the Waterfront on the lagoon, and countless cafés and restaurants are just a few minutes’ walk away. The rooms feature a bathroom with a toilet, air conditioning, a safe, a TV, tea and coffee-making facilities, and free Wi-Fi. The 50 Standard Rooms are located in the Graywood wing. The 50 Luxury and Deluxe Rooms are located in the Log-Inn wing. The hotel offers two pools, a bar, a restaurant, and a coffee shop.

DAY 8: KNYSNA PRIVATE HALF-DAY TOUR

You'll be picked up at your lodging and set out on a privately guided half-day tour of Knysna's highlights. You can choose from three different focus areas for this tour:

The first highlight is the region’s scenic beauty. You’ll visit various lookout points offering breathtaking views of the lagoon and the open sea, and you can take a short walk along the beach. Optionally, you can also take a boat tour of the lagoon.

The second focus is on Knysna’s rich history, from its beginnings as a simple logging and trading post to the present day. Many buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries can still be visited, and there are also a few interesting museums to explore if you’d like.

The third highlight is the culinary delights the town has to offer. Knysna is considered the “oyster capital” of South Africa, and you can take part in an oyster tasting. There’s also a local gin distillery and craft beer brewery that offer tastings as well. On Thesen Island, there’s an upscale artisan bakery that’s perfect for a delicious lunch (all tastings and meals are optional).

The tour language is English, no other people take part. Food, drinks, entrance fees and other costs are not included in the tour price and will be paid by you on site, if desired. This tour can be started at 9:00 am and 2:00 pm.

DAY 8: ROBBERG COASTAL PRIVATE HALF-DAY HIKE

OPTIONALLY BOOKABLE FROM 95 € PER PERSON

You will be picked up at your accommodation in Knysna. The drive heads east towards Plettenberg Bay to the Robberg Nature Reserve. The small nature reserve forms a peninsula in front of the elongated bay of Plettenberg Bay and enjoys UNESCO World Heritage status. There are always great views of the sea and, with a bit of luck, you may spot seals, dolphins or even whales (June to November).

You set off on the approximately 5.5 km long Witsand circular hiking trail and have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful surroundings time and again. The Robberg Nature Reserve is one of the most beautiful coastal reserves on the entire Garden Route. After around four hours, you will be dropped off at your accommodation in Knysna.

The tour language is English, no other people take part. Drinking water and entrance fees are included in the tour price. This is a moderate hike, you should be sure-footed. Sturdy shoes, clothing suitable for the weather and sun protection are essential. The hike can be started at 9:00 am or 2:00 pm.

This service can be booked for an additional charge.

DAY 9: KNYSNA TO TSITSIKAMMA PRIVATE DAY TOUR

You will be picked up at your accommodation in Knysna at 9 am. The drive heads east along beautiful stretches of coastline and through dense forests to the western part of the Tsitsikamma National Park. The beautiful Natures Valley is characterized by untouched stretches of beach. You take a walk in a paradisiacal setting, where the Groot River flows into the Indian Ocean.

Continue to the impressive Bloukrans Bridge, which offers the highest commercial bungee jump in the world. With a bit of luck, you can watch daring adventurers jump into the depths. Here you also have the opportunity to fortify yourself with an optional lunch. Your next stop is the famous Big Tree, a Yellowwood tree over 800 years old and almost 40 meters high, a worthy representative of the original tree population in the Tsitsikamma National Park.

The last stop is the mouth of the Storms River on the rugged rocky coast in the east of the national park. Here you take a short and relatively easy hike to the famous Suspension Bridge, an almost 80m long suspension bridge over the Storms River, one of the most popular photo opportunities in the region. If time permits, you can take a short boat trip on the river (optional). You will be dropped off at your accommodation in the Tsitsikamma at around 16:00.

The tour language is English, no other people take part. The entrance fees (conservation fees) are already included in the tour price. Lunch and the boat trip are not included in the tour price.

DAY 9 TO DAY 10: TSITSIKAMMA

The Tsitsikamma National Park is the largest contiguous forest area in South Africa and ideal for hiking or relaxing. The hiking trails always offer fantastic views of the dense forests and the endless sea. At the Storms River Restcamp in the eastern part of the park, you can take short boat trips on the river of the same name. The famous Bloukrans Bridge, which offers the highest bungee jump in the world, is also very close by. The western part, the Natures Valley, also offers the best swimming and hiking opportunities. Whales and dolphins are not rare guests.

The Tsitsikamma Village Inn is located directly in the small village of Storms River, surrounded by the beautiful Tsitsikamma National Park. The accommodation was built in the style of a small village and consists of several buildings spread across the extensive grounds. The famous Big Tree, an 800-year-old Yellowwood tree with a trunk circumference of nine meters and a height of almost 40 meters, is about a 20-minute walk away. The Storms River Restcamp is about 15 minutes' drive away. All 41 rooms have a bathroom/WC, a tea/coffee maker, air conditioning, a TV and free WiFi.
