ITINERARY FOR THE SMALL-GROUP SOUTH AFRICA TOUR FOR CONNOISSEURS

DAY 1: WELCOME TO SOUTH AFRICA (about 15km)

Welcome to South Africa! After your individual arrival at Cape Town Airport, you will be personally welcomed by a driver from our partner EZ Shuttle (English-speaking). You will then be taken to your centrally located accommodation in Cape Town and the rest of the day is at your leisure.

Did you sleep well on the plane and are you already raring to go? Take a stroll along the promenade to the famous Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. Here, you’ll find a lively atmosphere with great restaurants and numerous shops.

The "Mother City" Cape Town awaits you with all its highlights - WAMUKELEKILE!

Overnight Stay with Breakfast: Winchester Boutique Hotel in Cape Town

The Winchester is located directly on the promenade in the Sea Point neighborhood. Built in the 1920s in the original Cape Dutch architectural style, the hotel stands out for its “Shoreditch” restaurant, personalized service, spectacular location, and stylish elegance. The rooms are equipped with a bathroom (bathtub or shower), toilet, TV, minibar, tea and coffee making facilities, air conditioning, hairdryer, and safe.

DAY 2: CAPE TOWN & TABLE MOUNTAIN

After breakfast, you will be greeted by your German-speaking tour guide.

On a tour through downtown Cape Town, your tour guide will give you a taste of the “Capetonian Way of Life.” You’ll stroll through the Company’s Garden, where Jan van Riebeeck once grew fruits and vegetables. At Greenmarket Square, numerous souvenirs are waiting to be discovered, and Long Street—which is over 300 years old—with its restored Victorian houses, beckons with numerous pubs, trendy cafés, and restaurants.

You will also climb the mighty and famous Table Mountain. You don't have to do this on foot, but use the cable car to reach the top in no time at all and enjoy the magnificent view. Thanks to the "skip-the-line" ticket, you can walk past the long queue in a relaxed manner.

You will return to your accommodation in the late afternoon with many new impressions.

DAY 3: THE CAPE, PANORAMIC ROADS AND PENGUINS

Today you'll set out on a day trip to the Cape Peninsula.

First, stop in Muizenberg and marvel at the colorful little houses that appear on every postcard. Traveling along False Bay via Kalk Bay, you’ll reach Simon’s Town, where you can visit the famous penguin colony—cute snapshots guaranteed!

Continue to the Cape of Good Hope National Park with the Cape of Good Hope. A visit to the lighthouse, which began operating on May 1, 1860, is a must! If you don't fancy the steep climb, you can take the "Flying Dutchman" (cable car) to the top.

The journey continues along Chapman’s Peak Drive—one of the most beautiful coastal roads in the world—to Hout Bay and its small fishing harbor.
You’ll return to Cape Town in the early evening.

DAY 4: WINE REGIONS (approx. 180km)

After breakfast, today's itinerary takes you to the famous wine regions of the Western Cape.

Stellenbosch, the country’s second-oldest city, has a beautiful historic downtown that you’ll explore with your tour guide. The numerous Cape Dutch-style cafés, restaurants, and shops invite you to stroll around and linger. Everything here has remained just as beautiful as it was decades ago, and a visit to Dorpsstraat, number 84, at Oom Samie se Winkel is a must. “Auntie Emma’s store” isn’t quite the right term here, though, because “Oom” means “uncle,” so it’s actually “Uncle Emma’s store.”

The tour then takes you through the picturesque countryside of the wine region to a select winery. Against the backdrop of endless rows of vines, you’ll learn more about the long tradition of winemaking in the Cape and, of course, taste some of the distinctive wines for which South Africa is so famous.

In the afternoon, you’ll arrive in Franschhoek, South Africa’s “French Corner.” As you stroll past the small boutiques, art galleries, and cafés, you’ll discover the relaxed elegance and charm of this very special place.

You'll return to Cape Town in the late afternoon.

DAY 5: WHALES IN HERMANUS (about 120 km)

After a delicious breakfast, you'll set off and say goodbye to the "Mother City" and its lively atmosphere.

The drive takes you along the R44 coastal highway, with a view of the ocean the whole way. Keep your eyes peeled—you might even spot a whale! You’ll visit the African penguins at Betty’s Bay, and during a photo stop, you’ll be treated to a magnificent view of Walker Bay.

You’ll now arrive in Hermanus, the “Whale Capital.” Here, in the afternoon, you’ll have the opportunity to take part in a whale-watching boat tour (optional, for a fee, conducted in English; may be combined with participants from other groups). This gives you the chance to experience these giants of the sea up close. But be warned: the strong winds along this coast often cause rough seas. If you have a strong stomach, you’ll enjoy the tour even more!

In the evening, try out one of the many restaurants in Hermanus (optional and for a fee). There is something for every taste here.

BED AND BREAKFAST: AUBERGE BURGUNDY IN HERMANUS

Auberge Burgundy is a charming Provençal-style boutique hotel and spa centrally located on the Hermanus beach promenade, overlooking the picturesque old harbor and spectacular Walker Bay, which is famous for its natural beauty and whale watching. Surrounded by restaurants, markets, boutiques, galleries, and quaint shopping centers, Auberge Burgundy offers the ideal base for exploring the area. The guesthouse features a breakfast restaurant, a pool and pool deck, a spa area, and a romantic courtyard. All 17 rooms and suites include a bathroom with toilet, TV, minibar, tea and coffee making facilities, a safe, a hair dryer, and a balcony or terrace.

DAY 6: ROUTE 62 AND CANGO CAVES (about 370 km)

Today’s journey continues along the famous and scenically unique Route 62. This is the former highway connecting Port Elizabeth and Cape Town, which exudes a certain Wild West atmosphere—hence the name’s similarity to the legendary Route 66.
Generations of ostriches roamed the enchanting Little Karoo before Oudtshoorn became the center of ostrich farming. Here, you’ll visit an ostrich farm and learn about these large flightless birds and the history of ostrich farming (in English; may include other participants from different groups).

Your destination is the beautiful Surval Olive Estate. Here, you’ll enjoy an olive tasting in a stunning setting with magnificent views. In the evening, a delicious dinner awaits you in a relaxed Karoo atmosphere.

OVERNIGHT STAY WITH HALF-BOARD: SURVAL BOUTIQUE OLIVE ESTATE IN OUDTSHOORN

Located about 10 kilometers outside of Oudtshoorn in the beautiful Schoemanshoek Valley, overlooking the Swartberg Mountains, this upscale lodge is situated on a working olive farm. The 31 modern rooms all feature a bathroom with toilet, air conditioning, a minibar, a TV, tea and coffee making facilities, a safe, an outdoor seating area, and free Wi-Fi. The Family Rooms have two bedrooms. The spacious Honeymoon Suite also features an oversized bathtub. The lodge features a restaurant, a bar, a large outdoor area with a pool, and the following activities (some for a fee): kayaking and rowboat trips on a reservoir, mountain bike rentals, and various hiking trails.

DAY 7: CUTE ANIMALS IN THE LITTLE KAROO (about 350 km)

It’s an early start today, as you’ll experience the sunrise in a very special atmosphere! In the quiet expanse of the Little Karoo, you’ll observe wild meerkats in their natural habitat. As the first rays of sunlight illuminate the landscape, these curious animals emerge from their burrows and begin their day—a unique nature experience that will stay with you for a long time to come. Afterward, you’ll enjoy breakfast at your lodging before continuing on your journey.

Traveling over the scenic Outeniqua Pass—with plenty of time for spectacular photo stops—you’ll leave the arid hinterland behind and reach the coast. Your destination is the time-honored Parkes Manor guesthouse, located not far from the Waterfront in Knysna. You’ll have the afternoon to yourself here before enjoying a delicious dinner at Parkes Manor in the evening.

OVERNIGHT STAY WITH HALF-BOARD: PARKES MANOR IN KNYSNA

You’ll stay at the historic and lovingly restored Parkes Manor guesthouse, a stately estate set in a 12,000-square-meter park-like garden overlooking the lagoon. The Waterfront or downtown Knysna is about a 15-minute walk or a few minutes’ drive away. The nine individually decorated suites all feature a shower/toilet with a separate bathtub, a TV, tea and coffee-making facilities, air conditioning, a minibar, and a safe. The guesthouse offers free Wi-Fi, a fireplace lounge, a restaurant, a bar, an outdoor veranda with lagoon views, a large garden with a pool, a summer pavilion, a golf driving range with a putting green, and secure on-site parking.

DAY 8: SUNSET CRUISE ON THE KNYSNA LAGOON

You’re free to spend this day as you like! If the weather is nice, relax by the pool or take a walk to the Kynsna waterfront with its lovely boutiques, cafes, and restaurants.

Still full of energy? Then why not choose one of the following optional excursions:

Meet the Locals (49 EUR per person)
On a guided township tour in Knysna, you’ll delve deep into the moving history and daily life of the local community. Together with a guide and a local resident, you’ll meet people in the community, visit various facilities, and experience their world firsthand. These authentic insights will open up new perspectives on South Africa—shaped by history, encounters, and understanding.

Robberg Hike (105 euros per person)
Look forward to an unforgettable nature experience in the Robberg Nature Reserve near Plettenberg Bay. On this approximately 5.5-kilometer hike, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of the ocean, fresh sea air, and—with a little luck—encounters with seals, dolphins, or even whales. The impressive combination of rugged coastline, unspoiled nature, and fascinating wildlife makes this tour a special highlight along the Garden Route.

As the sun slowly sinks behind the famous Knysna Heads and bathes the lagoon in golden light, a very special evening begins aboard the Lara Bella. Enjoy the relaxing catamaran cruise across the calm waters, the fresh sea breeze, and the magical atmosphere of the sunset. This unforgettable experience is rounded out by a delicious BBQ on board. Is it pouring rain? No problem—your tour guide will work with you to find a great alternative!

DAY 9: TSITSIKAMMA NATIONAL PARK (about 170 km)

Goodbye, Knysna—and on we go along the coast through Plettenberg Bay to Tsitsikamma National Park. The vegetation here is very lush and diverse. The dense forest, with its tall, ancient trees, is one of South Africa’s last primeval forests.

First, you’ll come to the Big Tree, an ancient yellowwood tree that’s more than 40 meters tall. You’re sure to get a stiff neck! Next, there’s a short stop at the mouth of the Storms River, where you’ll have the chance (if it’s open) to walk across the famous suspension bridge. Hold on tight—it gets wobbly!

Optionally, you can also take a boat tour on the Storms River (in English; may include participants from other groups). Keep your eyes peeled—dolphins are often spotted off the coast, and whales can be seen seasonally as well.

Then the road gets bumpy, as only a gravel road leads to your next lodging—but it’s well worth the effort, and a true paradise awaits you here! Nestled among pristine dunes, endless beaches, and the wild beauty of the Indian Ocean, the Oyster Bay Lodge is a place to arrive and take a deep breath.
In the evening, a delicious dinner awaits you in the lodge’s cozy restaurant.

You’ll fly to Durban with your tour guide. From there, it’s just a short drive to your next accommodation in the beautiful coastal town of Ballito, north of the city of Durban. DAY 12: KWAZULU NATAL (about 250 km)

Continuing northward, you will eventually reach the resort town of St. Lucia in iSimangaliso Wetlands Park. This small town is located at the mouth of the Lake St. Lucia lagoon on a narrow spit of land, bordered by the St. Lucia Estuary to the west and the Indian Ocean to the east.

In the afternoon, you’ll board an open-top boat and set out on a tour of iSimangaliso Wetlands Park (conducted in English; may include other participants not in your group).
More than 1,500 crocodiles and 800 hippos call this place home, guaranteeing unique photo opportunities. As you cruise through the winding waterways of the wetland, keep an eye out for crocodiles and hippos, as well as possible sightings of eagles, vultures, Cape broadbills, and dozens of other bird species.

BED AND BREAKFAST: LIDIKO LODGE IN ST. LUCIA

Your destination is the beautiful and centrally located Lidiko Lodge in St. Lucia. Restaurants and shops are within walking distance. The beach is just a few minutes away by car or about a 30-minute walk. The 16 rooms feature a bathroom with toilet, air conditioning, a tea/coffee maker, a minibar, a safe, a veranda, and free Wi-Fi. The lodge is set in a large subtropical garden with a pool. There is a guest lounge with a bar and a large outdoor terrace.

DAY 13: GENTLE HILLS AND WILD ANIMALS

At daybreak, you’ll visit South Africa’s oldest and perhaps most beautiful wildlife park, the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park. The diverse vegetation provides a habitat for many mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. The “Big Five” are found in the park, as are cheetahs, wild dogs, giraffes, and nyalas. Hluhluwe and Imfolozi were established as separate reserves in 1895, when the populations of these animals were threatened by excessive hunting.

In the early 1960s, the white rhinoceros was on the brink of extinction, and Imfolozi was home to the last known population in the world. As part of “Operation Rhino,” carried out by the KwaZulu Nature Conservation Service, individuals were captured and sent to reserves and zoos around the world, allowing global populations to recover.

Here you will go on a game drive in an open off-road vehicle (English-speaking, can take place with other participants from outside the group). In the middle of the bush, you will be served a typical lunch by a courageous ranger. Enjoy your meal, but be careful: keep a close eye on your surroundings!

In the late afternoon, you'll return to St. Lucia and enjoy your free time by the pool or on the endless sandy beaches.

DAY 14: NAMBITI PRIVATE GAME RESERVE (estimated distance: 400 km)

You’ll set out early from St. Lucia, as you have a longer distance to cover today. The tropical coastal landscape gradually gives way to unspoiled bush and rolling hills. Along the way, you’ll experience the diverse landscape of KwaZulu-Natal, with vast grasslands, rolling hills, and small rural villages. In the early afternoon, you’ll arrive at the Umzolozolo Private Safari Lodge, idyllically situated in the malaria-free Nambiti Private Game Reserve. This expansive reserve is one of the most beautiful private game reserves in KwaZulu-Natal and boasts an impressive variety of flora and fauna. In addition to the “Big Five”—lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo—the reserve is also home to giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, and various species of antelope, among others.

You’ll set out on your first safari adventure as early as this afternoon. Accompanied by an experienced ranger, you’ll head out into the wilderness in an open-air safari vehicle. With a little luck, you’ll spot the reserve’s first large animals as the low-hanging sun bathes the landscape in warm light. It’s a special experience where not only the animals but also the sounds and the vastness of the African bush create unforgettable memories. After returning to the lodge, the day comes to a close in the heart of the African wilderness. Enjoy the tranquility and the unique atmosphere of the lodge over a delicious dinner.
