ABOUT THIS TRIP

At the foot of the majestic Warmwaterberg Mountains in the Little Karoo semi-desert lies the approximately 58,000-hectare Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, which is considered a leader in terms of local flora and fauna in South Africa. The private reserve is home to the Big Five—lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, and rhinos—as well as many other African wildlife species such as giraffes, zebras, and antelopes. About a 30-minute drive from Hermanus lies the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, nestled between the Indian Ocean and the Kleinriversbergen Mountains—an ecological paradise with impressive flora and (marine) fauna. Whales (seasonal), dolphins, sharks, seals, and penguins are common sights in Walker Bay.

This module is in English and can be started daily. Individual changes such as the number of overnight stays, alternative accommodation or additional activities are possible. The tour can be started from/to Cape Town or Johannesburg for an additional charge. This tour can also be combined with other of our modules by adding domestic flights or land transfers. DAY 1: CAPE TOWN

ONEWAY TRANSFER TO SANBONA

This private transfer is operated by a qualified English-speaking driver. The vehicle is air-conditioned and corresponds to your private group size, there are no other passengers. The transfer company has all the necessary licenses and insurance for its vehicles and drivers to guarantee legal passenger transportation (no Uber or similar).

In the case of a transfer from your accommodation, you will be picked up at the entrance of your guesthouse, lodge or hotel at the agreed time. You will be driven to your destination and dropped off at your accommodation or at the airport.

For transfers from the airport, you will be met personally in the arrivals hall. Please look out for a person carrying a sign with your name on it. DAY 1 TO DAY 3:

MONTAGU SANBONA WILDLIFE RESERVE

The approximately 58,000-hectare Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is situated in the heart of the Little Karoo at the foot of the Warmwaterberg between Montagu and Barrydale off the famous Route 62. Sanbona offers you relaxation, luxury and safari in the realm of the Bushmen of South Africa. The name is made up of the word "San", as the Bushmen are called, and the word "bona" as a sign of the indigenous people's hope for this land, where they lived freely for thousands of years. This is because former farmland was converted into a reserve here in the 1990s and returned to nature. Now, for the first time in 200 years, lions and cheetahs can be seen living freely in the Klein Karoo in the game reserve. But with a bit of luck, you can also spot the other representatives of the Big Five and many other African wild animals here.

The luxurious Dwyka Tented Lodge is situated in a dry Karoo gorge and surrounded by impressive rock formations. The lodge offers a restaurant, a boma (traditional campfire dining area), a bar with fireplace and TV, a wine cellar, spa treatments for a fee and a souvenir store. The lodge's nine luxury tents are approximately 55 square meters in size and offer a bathroom with shower and free-standing bathtub, hairdryer, telephone, minibar, tea/coffee maker, safe, air conditioning, underfloor heating and a terrace with outdoor shower and private plunge pool.

For each overnight stay you take part in two guided game drives in an open off-road vehicle (English-speaking, participation with other people), which take place in the afternoon before dinner and in the morning before breakfast.

DAY 3 TO DAY 5:

HERMANUS

The tour continues to the "whale capital" of South Africa, Hermanus. Here you have the best opportunities to watch whales from the coast between June and November. Of course, you can also take a boat trip out to sea to get even closer to the largest mammals on earth. But Hermanus also has a lot to offer outside the whale season in the South African summer. There are excellent beaches, great restaurants and the Fernkloof Nature Reserve, a unique nature reserve with typical fynbos vegetation and many hiking trails. Even winegrowing has now left its insider status here in the Coastal Region. Over 30 wineries have joined together to form various wine routes.

The Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, nestled between the Indian Ocean and the Kleinriversberg mountains, is an eco-paradise with impressive flora and (marine) fauna and is about 30 minutes' drive from Hermanus. Whales (seasonal), dolphins, sharks, seals and penguins are not rare guests at Walker Bay. The 16 exclusive freestanding suites at Forest Lodge have a bathroom/WC, a bedroom with a separate lounge area, a fireplace, a minibar, a tea/coffee maker, a TV with DVD player, a safe and a veranda with sea view and outdoor shower. The lodge offers a restaurant, a bar, an infinity pool, a spacious outdoor deck with sea views, a spa area (for a fee) and free WiFi.

You take part in two activities per overnight stay, such as guided horseback rides, guided hikes, seasonal whale watching and fynbos safaris (subject to availability, English-speaking, with additional people).

The child rate applies to one child under the age of 12 staying in their parents' room. One child under the age of two stays free of charge. For children aged 12 and over, the adult rate generally applies. Not all accommodation allows children of all ages.

APPROXIMATE ADDITIONAL COSTS THAT ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THE PRICE

Long-haul flights to Southern Africa in Economy Class cost from EUR 900, while prices can be well over EUR 1000 in the high season. Flights in Premium Economy Class are available from 1500 EUR, in Business Class flights cost from 2500 EUR (per person for outward and return flights). All prices are average values depending on the airline and season. The actual prices at a given time depend on the number of bookings and may vary. Early booking is recommended, especially in the high season.

A light lunch costs around EUR 5 (small salad, soup) to EUR 8 (pizza, pasta, burger) per person, a dinner around EUR 9 (pizza, pasta, burger, large salad) to EUR 12 (steak, fish) to EUR 21 (three-course meal) per person. Coffee, tea, beer or soft drinks cost around EUR 1.60 per cup or glass. Prices may vary upwards or downwards depending on the region or type of restaurant.

Entrance fees to national parks cost between EUR 5 and EUR 25 per person per day, depending on the size and popularity of the park. Entrance fees to museums or other attractions cost between EUR 3 and EUR 20 per person. Children under the age of 12 usually pay half price.
