Join us on a round-trip journey through South Africa’s largest semi-desert, across spectacular mountain landscapes, and back along the Wild Coast. You’ll venture off the beaten tourist path and discover many exciting hidden gems that you’ll often have all to yourself. You’ll also experience Africa’s impressive wildlife, including the Big Five, across three distinct climate zones. Despite the adventurous nature of this tour, you’ll stay in comfortable accommodations.

We are happy to change this tour itinerary or the rental car category according to your individual wishes. Please contact us for your personal offer. This tour can be started all year round. In the South African winter from April to October, it tends to be cooler and drier in the Drakensberg and Lesotho, and it can snow in July and August. In contrast, the South African summer from November to March tends to be warmer and wetter. You should allow just under three weeks for this trip. A four-wheel drive vehicle is not absolutely necessary for this route, but a car with a higher wheelbase is very helpful.

DAY 1 TO DAY 3 (APPROX. 110 KM):

ADDO

On arrival at Port Elizabeth Airport or at the agreed station, you will receive your rental car. Your destination is the malaria-free Addo Elephant Park in the Eastern Cape, famous for its large herds of elephants, which have given the park its name. Nowhere else in the world are there more elephants per square kilometer than here in Addo. With a bit of luck, you may also spot the other representatives of the Big Five, although the big cats are only found in relatively small numbers. A classic is the Addo Dung Beetle, a dung beetle species that can only be found here.

Chrislin African Lodge is located just a few kilometers from the famous Addo Elephant Park in a sprawling garden, ideal for nature and bird lovers. The pool is perfect for cooling off on hot summer days, and there’s a playground for children. The restaurant primarily serves food grown on-site or sourced from neighboring farms. The 18 detached chalets all feature a bathroom with toilet, a fan or air conditioning, a minibar, tea and coffee-making facilities, a hair dryer, a seating area, and free Wi-Fi.

The price includes a roughly four-hour game drive in an open-top SUV through Addo Elephant Park.

GRAAFF-REINET

Graaff-Reinet is one of South Africa’s oldest towns and is considered the jewel of the Karoo semi-desert. Thanks to its many buildings in the Cape Dutch architectural style, a visit to the town feels like a stroll through a living museum. No other South African town has as many listed buildings as Graaff-Reinet. In the center stands the imposing Groot Kerk, the “Great Church,” modeled after Salisbury Cathedral in the UK. The town is almost entirely surrounded by Camdeboo National Park, which offers hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities and whose highlight is the bizarre rock formation of the “Valley of Desolation”—especially at sunset.

Sundays Karoo Guesthouse is centrally located in Graaff-Reinet. Within walking distance you will find cafés, restaurants, stores, museums and the famous Groot Kerk church. The Valley Of Desolation can be reached in about 20 minutes by car. The guest house has a swimming pool, a garden, a bar, a guest lounge, a cozy outdoor terrace and free Wi-Fi. Each of the eight rooms is equipped with a TV, air conditioning, a bathroom/WC and a tea/coffee maker.

DAY 4: GRAAFF-REINET

Your English-speaking guide will pick you up at your accommodation in the late afternoon. You will set off on a sundowner tour on which you can discover the breathtakingly beautiful geological formation of the Valley Of Desolation. The formation with its spectacular 120-metre-high columns of ancient volcanic rock, which watch over the endless, parched plains of Camdeboo, is impressive and glows in the most beautiful colors, especially at sunset. There is also a panoramic view over Graaff-Reinet. With a bit of luck, you may even spot various animals such as kudus, Cape Mountain zebras, mountain redbucks and the majestic Verraux eagle with its two-meter wingspan.

Please note the exact pick-up time in your tour book. You will be dropped off at your accommodation after about three hours. The tour is in English and can take place with additional people. Entrance fees and light sundowner snacks are included in the price.

DAY 5 TO DAY 6 (APPROX. 430 KM):

BLOEMFONTEIN

You continue to Bloemfontein. This city is also known as the "City of Roses" due to its abundance of flowers and the annual Rose Festival. The name literally means "source of flowers" in Afrikaans. The Free State Botanical Garden is therefore the perfect place to go for flower lovers. In Sesotho and Pedi, on the other hand, the city is called Mangaung, which literally means "place of the cheetahs". The modern city with a population of over 400,000 offers some interesting historical buildings and museums as well as good shopping and foodie temples.

The beautiful Abiento Guest House is located in a quiet yet central area of Bloemfontein. The owners have lovingly restored the attractive house, creating spacious and luxurious accommodation. All of the city's attractions are within easy reach by car. All ten rooms are equipped with bath/WC, air conditioning, TV, safe, tea/coffee maker, minibar and free Wi-Fi. The only difference between the various room categories is the size. The guest house offers a pool, a garden, an outdoor deck and a lounge area.

CLARENS

Your journey continues to the Golden Gate National Park, which has recently been merged with the Qwa-Qwa National Park. This national park in the highlands of South Africa is one of the highlights of the country with its golden mountains, great hiking opportunities and unique landscape. It is not uncommon to encounter smaller game such as zebra and antelope on a hike. Hiking routes range from 45 minutes to several hours in length. The light is most beautiful at sunset. Close to the park is the small artists' village of Clarens with its many studios, boutiques, cafés and restaurants. Clarens repeatedly appears in the best lists of the most beautiful small towns in South Africa.

You will spend the night in the beautiful Mont D'Or Hotel on the edge of Clarens with a fantastic view of the surrounding mountains. All the attractions of the small town are within walking distance. The entrance to the Golden Gate National Park is around a 15-minute drive away. The 25 rooms all have a bathroom/WC, air conditioning, a TV, a minibar, tea/coffee making facilities and a safe. The Family Suites also have two single beds. The Executive Suites are more spacious, furnished to a higher standard and offer a great view of the mountains. BERGVILLE

You drive to the northern Drakensberg near the small village of Bergville. This is the ideal starting point to explore the beautiful Royal Natal National Park with the famous mountain formation of the Amphitheater and the unique Tugela Falls, the second highest waterfall in the world. There are numerous hiking trails of varying lengths and levels of difficulty. But the surrounding area also has a lot to offer with the Giants Castle Game Reserve, the Spioenkop Dam Nature Reserve and the Battlefields Route.

The comfortable Ledges Retreat guest farm is located in the middle of the mountains and close to the Royal Natal National Park. Here you can slow down and enjoy the peace and quiet of the mountains. The four cozy guest rooms have a bathroom/WC, a minibar, a tea/coffee maker, a fan, heating and a TV. The two family cottages have two separate bedrooms, each with its own bathroom/WC, as well as a lounge area with kitchenette and fireplace. The accommodation offers a dining room, a lounge area, a pool and a trampoline. Various hiking trails start directly at the spacious outdoor area.

SUNDOWNER RIDE

You set off on a sundowner ride with a fantastic view of the amphitheater in the light of the setting sun. Dusk is probably the most magical time in the mountains.

This ride takes about two hours and starts in the late afternoon. The level of difficulty is easy to moderate. A sundowner drink and light snacks are included. The tour language is English and the tour can be done with additional people. Starting point is the Montusi Mountain Lodge (own arrival).

DAY 8: BERGVILLE

TUGELA GORGE DAY HIKE

The Tugela Gorge Hike is definitely the most popular hike in the northern Drakensberg. From the parking lot of Thendele Camp in the Royal Natal National Park, you and your guide walk through the gorge of the Tugela River with its crystal-clear rock pools to the foot of the Tugela Falls, the second highest waterfall in the world. Along the way, you will have great views of the mountains, including the famous amphitheater.

The journey to the Royal Natal National Park is on your own. Conservation fees are included in the price, food and drinks are not included. This hike is English-speaking and privately guided. It is considered moderate and takes around five to six hours. The total distance is around 14 kilometers with an elevation gain of around 300 meters. An appropriate level of fitness and clothing suitable for the weather and the route, including footwear, are required.

DAY 9 TO DAY 11 (APPROX. 120 KM):

LADYSMITH

Close to Ladysmith is the approximately 9000ha malaria-free Nambiti Game Reserve, still an insider tip in South Africa. The private game reserve is home to the Big Five and many other African wild animals such as zebras, giraffes, antelopes and cheetahs. The varied landscape consists of vast savannahs, dense bushland and green valleys, crossed by the Sundays River. In contrast to state-run national parks, only overnight guests have access to the private reserves. These are therefore much better suited to a short stay for unique wildlife sightings. The small lodges also offer a very personal atmosphere. Specially trained rangers ensure a first-class nature experience.

You will stay at Elephant Rock Lodge in the southern part of the Nambiti Game Reserve. The intimate lodge consists of just five detached chalets with en-suite bathroom/WC, air-conditioning, tea/coffee making facilities, minibar, safe, veranda with outdoor shower and free Wi-Fi. The lodge offers a restaurant, a bar, a fire pit, a rock pool and an outdoor deck overlooking a small lake.

You take part in two guided game drives per night in an open off-road vehicle (English-speaking, conducted with additional persons), which take place in the afternoon before dinner and in the morning before breakfast. You pay the conservation fees for the Nambiti Game Reserve on site.

DAY 11 TO DAY 13 (APPROX. 290 KM):

HIMEVILLE

Himeville is the center of the southern Drakensberg. Several nature reserves such as the Coleford Nature Reserve and the Garden Castle State Forest are less than half an hour's drive away. The town is also the ideal starting point for day trips on the Sani Pass to Lesotho, the only southern link road between the two countries. The pass is only accessible with a four-wheel drive off-road vehicle, so there are several providers of guided day tours on site.

The Sani Valley Nature Lodges are detached chalets situated on a lake within a private nature reserve, offering breathtaking views of the southern Drakensberg Mountains. In the reserve, you can spot zebras and various species of antelope, as well as an impressive array of birdlife. The eleven lodges offer nature lovers plenty of peace and privacy, along with stunning views of the lake and mountains. All chalets feature a bathroom/toilet, a TV, a kitchenette, a fan, a lounge with a fireplace, a safe, and a veranda with barbecue facilities. The Sunset Lodges are suitable for two people. The Lakeside Lodges additionally feature a bunk bed for children and a private jacuzzi on the veranda. The Early Mist Lodges offer an additional bedroom for children and a private jacuzzi on the veranda. The clubhouse offers various activities (some for a fee), such as guided hikes, boat rentals, and spa treatments. Breakfast is also served here. Dinner is delivered to your chalet. Aside from breakfast and dinner, there is no restaurant or bar service.

DAY 12: UNDERBERG

SANI PASS DAY TOUR

Your day trip to Sani Pass begins at 9:30 a.m. in Underberg. The drive up to just under 3,000 meters above sea level takes about two and a half hours. Along the way, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and the valley during various photo stops. By noon, you’ll reach the barren highlands of Lesotho, where a delicious lunch awaits you (lunch included; drinks are paid for on site). The tour continues to a local village, where you’ll learn more about the inhabitants of this independent kingdom and can sample homemade beer and freshly baked bread. Afterward, the return journey over the pass begins. You’ll arrive back at your starting point in Unterberg around 4:30 p.m.

The tour lasts about seven hours, is conducted in English, and is led by a guide. The meeting point is at 9:00 a.m. at the Trout Walk Center in Underberg. Overnight guests staying in Himeville will be picked up at their accommodations along the way. You must bring your passport to cross the border; please be sure to check the entry requirements for Lesotho that apply to you. Please bring warm clothing.

DAY 13 TO DAY 15 (APPROX. 220 KM):

SHELLY BEACH

Shelly Beach is located on the Hibiscus Coast of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa and is famous for its hospitality and safety, as well as the abundance of beautiful shells washed up on the shore. The area is a subtropical paradise, where warm waters teeming with exquisite tropical fish and coral reefs complement the pristine beaches. Shelly Beach offers excellent amenities, including the Shelly Center shopping mall, movie theaters, and restaurants. The famous Oribi Gorge, a breathtaking canyon along the Umzimkulwana River, is about a 30-minute drive away.

The comfortable Tropical Beach Boutique Guesthouse is quietly located in a small side street with direct access to the beach, which invites you to relax, stroll and sunbathe. Restaurants, cafés and shops are less than a five-minute drive away. The eight rooms have a bathroom/WC, air conditioning, a TV, a minibar, a tea/coffee maker and a safe. The guest house offers a subtropical garden with pool, fire pit and barbecue facilities. Free WLAN is available.

Port St. Johns is located at the very northern tip of the still largely unspoiled and spectacular Wild Coast, with its many secluded beaches and stunning landscapes. The ocean and the mighty Umzimvubu River offer countless opportunities for water sports. The coast and the hinterland provide unique hiking opportunities. The beaches are paradisiacal. South Africa’s “Wild Coast” is a paradise not only for active vacationers and outdoor enthusiasts but also for anyone seeking to relax amidst the beauty of nature. The drive along the Wild Coast has an adventurous feel to it. A certain open-minded attitude is required, as this region is not yet as developed as other tourist destinations in South Africa.

You will spend the night at Intaba River Lodge, a typical rustic Wild Coast Resort directly on the banks of the Umzimvubu River in the midst of beautiful green nature. It is about a ten-minute drive to First Beach and the center of Port St. Johns, and about a 20-minute drive to Second Beach and Silaka Nature Reserve. The 20 rooms have a bathroom/WC, a TV, tea/coffee making facilities, air conditioning, a minibar, a safe and a veranda. The Standard Rooms are distributed in detached bungalows in the garden of the complex. The Superior Rooms are slightly more spacious and modern and are located in the main building of the lodge. The Executive Rooms are very spacious and face the river. The lodge offers a large garden with two pools, a bar, an outdoor terrace by the river, a restaurant and a spa area for a fee.

COFFEE BAY

Coffee Bay is one of the absolute highlights of the Wild Coast. The drive there follows an approximately 80-kilometer paved road that winds through many hills and small villages. The beach at the mouth of the Nenga River is a paradise for swimmers and surfers. A must-see is the famous natural stone arch “Hole In The Wall,” which can be reached via a well-maintained gravel road or by hiking along the coast. This is the territory of the Xhosa tribe, to which Nelson Mandela also belonged. Various memorials have been erected here in his honor. The drive along the Wild Coast has an adventurous character. A certain open-minded attitude is required, as this region is not yet as developed as other tourist regions in South Africa.

The Green Fields Hotel, which opened in 2023, is located about a five-minute drive outside of Coffee Bay on a hill with a fantastic view of the sea. The small Wildview Beach is just a short walk away. Hiking trails start right at the property. The 19 modern rooms feature a bathroom with a toilet, a tea/coffee maker, a TV, and a minibar. The hotel offers a pool (seasonal), an outdoor terrace, a restaurant, a bar, and free Wi-Fi in the common areas.

Just half an hour north of East London lies the small village of Chintsa, a paradise nestled in the beautiful countryside at the southern beginning and end of the Wild Coast. Here you can slow down wonderfully in this pristine piece of Africa. Let yourself be enchanted by the dreamlike landscape, the evergreen nature and the endless sandy beaches.

Cintsa Lodge is idyllically situated above a pristine dune landscape. A breathtaking panorama draws the eye from the Haga-Haga Mountains in the east to far beyond the Cintsa Lagoon in the west. You can reach the endless sandy beach in about 20 minutes via a beautiful hiking trail. The seven rooms are equipped with a bathroom/WC, a TV, a minibar, a tea/coffee maker, a safe, a hairdryer and a balcony or terrace. The private Amakhala Game Reserve is located near the Addo Elephant Park in a malaria-free environment. The reserve is home to the Big Five, i.e. lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo and rhinos, as well as many other African wild animals. The 8500-hectare reserve on the Bushmans River offers a beautiful landscape typical of the Eastern Cape. In contrast to the state-run Addo Elephant Park, only overnight guests have access to the private reserves. These are therefore much better suited for a short stay for unique game viewing. The small lodges also offer a very personal atmosphere. Specially trained rangers ensure a first-class nature experience.

In the heart of the Amakhala Game Reserve lies Woodbury Tented Camp, an intimate and peaceful experience in typical Eastern Cape bushveld with great views of the surrounding area. Ten comfortable tented suites built on raised wooden platforms offer a unique "Out Of Africa" feeling. The suites have a fixed bed, a shower/WC, heating and a fan, a tea/coffee maker, a safe and a private veranda. The lodge offers a pool with sun loungers, a central area with a viewing deck, a lounge with an outdoor terrace and free WiFi.

The malaria-free Sibuya Game Reserve is probably one of the most unique safari destinations in South Africa. The Kariega River, which runs through the middle of the reserve, is particularly attractive. In combination with the nearby ocean, this naturally attracts an incredible variety of bird species: more than 400 different species have been counted to date. It is also a sanctuary for a rich variety of game species, from elephant to otter, and is of course home to the Big Five. After your arrival at the reception in Kenton-on-Sea, you will take a boat up the Kariega River to your accommodation at 12 noon. This approximately 9 km long trip is a unique experience in itself.

Forest Camp is located right on the banks of the Kariega River. Electricity is generated exclusively by solar panels, so energy-intensive appliances cannot be used—a true “Out of Africa” experience. The eight freestanding tent suites are connected by wooden walkways through the forest and feature a shower/toilet with a separate bathtub, a fireplace, and an outdoor deck. The camp features a lounge area and a boma, where dinner is served around the campfire when the weather permits.

You take part in two guided game drives per night in an open off-road vehicle (English-speaking, participation with other people), which are conducted in the afternoon before dinner and in the morning before breakfast.
