Join us on a round trip through South Africa's largest semi-desert to the Roof of Africa in Lesotho and back along the Wild Coast. You will move off the beaten tourist track and discover exciting insider tips, most of which you will have all to yourself. You will also experience Africa's impressive wildlife, including the Big Five, in three different climate zones. Despite the adventurous character of this tour, you will spend the night in upscale accommodation in our Superior category.

In the South African winter from April to October, it tends to be cooler and drier in the Drakensberg and Lesotho, and it can snow in July and August. In contrast, the South African summer from November to March tends to be warmer and wetter. You should allow just under three weeks for this trip. A four-wheel drive vehicle is not absolutely necessary for this route, but a car with a higher wheelbase is very helpful.

DAY 1 TO DAY 3 (APPROX. 110 KM):

ADDO

On arrival at Port Elizabeth Airport or at the agreed station, you will receive your rental car. Your destination is the malaria-free Addo Elephant Park in the Eastern Cape, famous for its large herds of elephants, which have given the park its name. Nowhere else in the world are there more elephants per square kilometer than here in Addo. With a bit of luck, you may also spot other representatives of the Big Five, although the big cats are only found in relatively small numbers. A classic is the Addo Dung Beetle, a dung beetle species that can only be found here.

You will spend the night at the comfortable Addo Wildlife Lodge in the small town of Addo, just a few kilometers from the famous Addo Elephant Park. The grounds are home to springbok and other small game. There is a pool, a playground for children, a fire pit, a wildlife center with birds and reptiles, a farm store, a restaurant and a bar. The 17 rooms have a bathroom/WC, air conditioning, a tea/coffee maker, a TV, a minibar and a veranda with seating. The Standard Rooms are detached rondavels furnished in African style. The Superior Chalets, which are also detached, are more spacious and furnished in a modern style. The Superior Family Chalets have two separate bedrooms, each with its own bathroom/WC and a lounge with kitchenette.

The price includes an approximately four-hour game drive in an open off-road vehicle in Addo Elephant Park. The activity is conducted in English and can be done with additional people. Conservation fees for Addo Elephant Park are already included.

GRAAFF-REINET

Graaff-Reinet is the fourth oldest town in South Africa and is rightly regarded as the jewel of the Little Karoo semi-desert. Thanks to the many Cape Dutch-style buildings, a visit to the town is like walking through a living museum. No other South African town has as many listed buildings as Graaff-Reinet. The imposing Groot Kerk, the "great church", which is modeled on the British Salisbury Cathedral, towers in the center. Just outside the city lies the Valley Of Desolation, a nature reserve with many bizarre rock formations. We recommend the 40-minute Nature Walk, which offers the best views of the Karoo, the valley and the city.

In the heart of Graff-Reinet, this charming boutique hotel impresses with a successful mix of Cape Dutch Victorian and typical Karoo architecture.
The building complex originally dates back to 1786 and has been extensively renovated. There are a total of 48 rooms and three pools spread around the spacious gardens. All rooms have a bathroom/WC, air conditioning, a minibar, a TV, a tea/coffee station, a safe and free Wi-Fi. The Bachelor Rooms are approximately 20 square meters in size. You set off on a guided walking tour through the architectural jewel of the Karoo and learn a lot about the history of South Africa's fourth oldest city. You will visit sights and monuments such as Reinet House, the Drostdy, the Dutch Reformed Church and the Graaff-Reinet Club, where bullet holes in the bar reveal a fascinating past.

The tour language is English. The tour lasts around three hours and can be done with additional people. Entrance fees are already included in the price. You will be picked up and dropped off at your accommodation. Please note the exact pick-up time in your tour book. The routes are covered on foot.

DAY 4: GRAAFF-REINET

VALLEY OF DESOLATION SUNDOWNER TOUR

Your English-speaking guide will pick you up at your accommodation in the late afternoon. You will set off on a sundowner tour on which you can discover the breathtakingly beautiful geological formation of the Valley Of Desolation. The formation with its spectacular 120-metre-high columns of ancient volcanic rock, which watch over the endless, parched plains of Camdeboo, is impressive and glows in the most beautiful colors, especially at sunset. There is also a panoramic view over Graaff-Reinet. With a bit of luck, you may even spot various animals such as kudus, Cape Mountain zebras, mountain redbucks and the majestic Verraux eagle with its two-meter wingspan.

Please note the exact pick-up time in your tour book. You will be dropped off at your accommodation after about three hours. The tour is in English and can take place with additional people. Entrance fees and light sundowner snacks are included in the price.

DAY 5 TO DAY 6 (APPROX. 440 KM):

BLOEMFONTEIN

You continue to Bloemfontein. This city is also known as the "City of Roses" due to its abundance of flowers and the annual Rose Festival. The name literally means "source of flowers" in Afrikaans. The Free State Botanical Garden is therefore the perfect place to go for flower lovers. In Sesotho and Pedi, on the other hand, the city is called Mangaung, which literally means "place of the cheetahs". The modern city with a population of over 400,000 offers some interesting historical buildings and museums as well as good shopping and foodie temples.

The modern Tredenham Boutique Hotel is located in the quiet surroundings of the Tredenham Valley, yet only a few minutes' drive from Bloemfontein's stores and tourist highlights such as the Botanical Gardens. All ten rooms have a bathroom/WC, air conditioning, a TV, a safe, a minibar, a tea/coffee maker and a balcony or terrace. The apartment also has a kitchenette. LESOTHO

The independent kingdom of Lesotho is one of the highest countries in the world and is also known as the "roof of Africa". The individual parts of the country lie at an altitude of between 1400 and 2000 meters, with some mountain peaks even exceeding 3000 meters. The high plateaus are criss-crossed by river valleys and inselbergs. Snowfall is to be expected in July and August, which is why Lesotho has the only real ski resort in southern Africa with slopes, lifts and huts. In the remaining months, the country is a paradise for active vacationers and outdoor enthusiasts.

In the north of Lesotho in Tsehlanyane National Park, about an hour's drive from the South African town of Clarens, lies the luxurious Maliba Lodge with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. Hiking, horse riding and swimming are just some of the many activities available here. Tours to dinosaur footprints or to neighboring villages are optional. More than ten hiking trails start right on the doorstep, which you can do on your own or with a guide for an extra charge. The nine detached and spacious Mountain Chalets have a bathroom/WC, a tea/coffee maker, a TV with DVD player, a minibar, a safe, a fireplace and a private veranda with a view. The lodge offers a bar, a restaurant, a spa area (for a fee), a fireplace lounge and various viewing decks.

You drive to the northern Drakensberg near the small village of Bergville. This is the ideal starting point to explore the beautiful Royal Natal National Park with the famous mountain formation of the Amphitheater and the unique Tugela Falls. There are numerous hiking trails of varying lengths and levels of difficulty. The surrounding area also has a lot to offer with the Giants Castle Game Reserve, the Spioenkop Dam Nature Reserve and the Battlefields Route.

Stay in a chalet in the upscale Montusi Mountain Lodge with a view of the famous amphitheater. The well-kept and spacious outdoor area invites you to relax and unwind. Adventurous guests can reach all the highlights of the northern Drakensberg from here on day trips. The 14 detached chalets offer a bathroom/WC, a lounge area with a separate bedroom, a fan, underfloor heating, a fireplace, a TV, a minibar, a tea/coffee maker and a veranda with mountain views. The Family Suites have two separate bedrooms, each with its own bathroom/WC. The Mountain View Chalets also have a large skylight with mountain views from the bedroom. Several hiking trails to a small waterfall, to a cave with historical rock paintings or to the summit of Mountusi Peak start right outside the door. You set off on a sundowner drive in an off-road vehicle to the private Montusi Estate with a fantastic view of the amphitheater in the light of the setting sun. Dusk is probably the most magical time in the mountains. With a bit of luck, you can also marvel at the typical wildlife of the Drakensberg on the way, as zebras, eland antelopes and other wild animals are not rare guests. On the way, you make a sundowner stop at a beautiful viewpoint.

This excursion starts at 4 p.m. and lasts around two hours. A sundowner drink and light snacks are included. The tour language is English and the tour can be conducted with additional people.

DAY 9: BERGVILLE

TUGELA GORGE DAY HIKE

The Tugela Gorge Hike is definitely the most popular hike in the northern Drakensberg. From the parking lot of Thendele Camp in the Royal Natal National Park, you and your guide walk through the gorge of the Tugela River with its crystal-clear rock pools to the foot of the Tugela Falls, the second highest waterfall in the world. Along the way, you will have great views of the mountains, including the famous amphitheater.

The journey to the Royal Natal National Park is on your own. Conservation fees are included in the price, food and drinks are not included. This hike is English-speaking and privately guided. It is considered moderate and takes around five to six hours. The total distance is around 14 kilometers with an elevation gain of around 300 meters. An appropriate level of fitness and clothing suitable for the weather and the route, including footwear, are required.

DAY 10 TO DAY 12 (APPROX. 130 KM):

LADYSMITH

Close to Ladysmith is the approximately 9000ha malaria-free Nambiti Game Reserve, still an insider tip in South Africa. The private game reserve is home to the Big Five and many other African wild animals such as zebras, giraffes, antelopes and cheetahs. The varied landscape consists of vast savannahs, dense bushland and green valleys, crossed by the Sundays River. In contrast to state-run national parks, only overnight guests have access to the private reserves. These are therefore much better suited to a short stay for unique wildlife sightings. The small lodges also offer a very personal atmosphere. Specially trained rangers ensure a first-class nature experience.

The luxurious Umzolozolo Safari Lodge is situated on a hill in the southern part of the Nambiti Private Game Reserve and offers spectacular views over the surrounding area. The lodge has nine luxurious detached chalets and suites with panoramic views that blend seamlessly into the landscape. All rooms are equipped with bath/WC, indoor and outdoor showers, air-conditioning, private balcony overlooking the valley, tea/coffee making facilities, hairdryer, TV and minibar. The Luxury Chalets are furnished in traditional safari style and have a pull-out sofa for children. A Luxury Chalet has two separate bedrooms, each with its own bathroom/WC. The Luxury Suites are slightly more spacious and more modern. The Presidential Suite also has an outdoor whirlpool. The lodge has a spacious lounge, an infinity pool with a view, a boma (traditional campfire dining area), a spa (for a fee) and free WiFi.

HIMEVILLE

Himeville is the center of the southern Drakensberg. Several nature reserves such as the Coleford Nature Reserve and the Garden Castle State Forest are less than half an hour's drive away. The town is also the ideal starting point for day trips on the Sani Pass to Lesotho, the only southern link road between the two countries. The pass is only accessible with a four-wheel drive off-road vehicle, so there are several providers of guided day tours on site.

The Sani Valley Nature Lodges are detached chalets and are situated on a lake in a private nature reserve with breathtaking views of the southern Drakensberg Mountains. In the reserve you can discover zebras and various antelope species as well as impressive birdlife. The eleven lodges offer nature lovers plenty of peace and privacy as well as a fantastic view of the lake and the mountains. All chalets have a bathroom/WC, a TV, a kitchenette, a fan, a lounge with a fireplace, a safe and a veranda with barbecue facilities. The Sunset Lodges are suitable for two people. The Lakeside Lodges also have a bunk bed for children and a private Jacuzzi on the veranda. The Early Mist Lodges offer an additional bedroom for children and a private jacuzzi on the veranda. The clubhouse offers various activities (some for a fee) such as guided hikes, boat rentals and spa treatments. Breakfast is also served here. Dinner is delivered to your chalet.

DAY 13: UNDERBERG

Your day tour to the Sani Pass starts at 9:30 a.m. in Underberg. The journey to an altitude of almost 2,900 m takes approximately two and a half hours. Along the way, you'll enjoy magnificent views of the surrounding mountains at various photo stops. At midday, you'll reach the Sani Mountain Lodge, Africa's highest pub, where a delicious lunch awaits you (lunch included, drinks are paid for locally). The tour continues to a local village, where you'll learn more about the people of Lesotho and sample home-brewed beer and homemade bread. Afterwards, the return journey over the pass begins. You'll return to your starting point in Unterberg around 4:30 p.m.

The tour lasts around seven hours. The tour is in English and takes place with other people. Meeting point is at 9:00 am at the Trout Walk Center in Underberg. Overnight guests in Himeville will be picked up at their accommodation en route. You must take your passport with you to cross the border, please note the entry requirements of Lesotho that apply to you. Please take warm clothing with you.

PORT ST. JOHNS

Port St. Johns is located in the very north of the still very pristine and spectacular Wild Coast with many secluded beaches and great landscapes. This is the territory of the Xhosa tribe, to which Nelson Mandela also belonged. The sea and the mighty Umzimvubu River are ideal for countless water sports activities. The coast and the hinterland offer unique hiking opportunities. The beaches are paradisiacally beautiful. The "wild coast" of South Africa is a paradise for active vacationers and outdoor enthusiasts as well as for all those who want to relax in the beauty of nature.

Umngazi River Bungalows & Spa Resort is located directly on the Umngazi River estuary and the endless Indian Ocean. Beach walks, horse riding, water sports, mountain biking, hiking and fishing are just some of the many activities available on this pristine coastline. The 69 mostly detached bungalows are spread throughout the extensive grounds and all have a bathroom/WC, a coffee/tea maker and a terrace with an outdoor shower. The Sea View Bungalows are located on the riverbank and offer a unique view over the beach and the sea from the veranda. Just half an hour north of East London lies the small village of Chintsa, a paradise nestled in the beautiful countryside at the southern beginning and end of the Wild Coast. Here you can slow down wonderfully in this pristine piece of Africa. Let yourself be enchanted by the dreamlike landscape, the evergreen nature and the endless sandy beaches.

You will spend the night at Crawfords Beach Lodge right by the sea with spectacular views. You can reach the long, fine sandy beach of Chintsa in just a few minutes via a small path. The 56 rooms are spread over the grounds in a two-storey design and all have a bathroom/WC, TV, fan, minibar, safe, balcony or terrace and free Wi-Fi. The Honeymoon Suite is the largest room and has a viewing deck with direct sea views. The Front Row Seaview Rooms are located in a building in the first row with a direct sea view. The Back Row Seaview Rooms are located in a building in the second row with a limited sea view. The Family Rooms have two or three separate bedrooms, each with its own bathroom/WC. GREATER ADDO

The malaria-free Sibuya Game Reserve is probably one of the most unique safari destinations in South Africa. The Kariega River, which runs through the middle of the reserve, is particularly attractive. In combination with the nearby ocean, this naturally attracts an incredible variety of bird species: more than 400 different species have been counted to date. It is also a sanctuary for a rich variety of game species, from elephant to otter, and is of course home to the Big Five. After your arrival at the reception in Kenton-on-Sea, you will take a boat up the Kariega River to your accommodation at 12 noon. This approximately 9 km long trip is a unique experience in itself.

The Forest Camp is located directly on the banks of the Kariega River and is run according to ecological principles. Electricity is generated exclusively via solar cells, so that energy-intensive appliances cannot be operated - a real out-of-Africa feeling. The eight freestanding tented suites are connected by wooden walkways through the forest and have a shower/WC with separate bathtub, a fireplace and an outdoor deck. The camp offers a lounge area and a boma, where dinner is served around the campfire in good weather.

You take part in two guided game drives per night in an open off-road vehicle (English-speaking, participation with other people), which are conducted in the afternoon before dinner and in the morning before breakfast. Alternatively, guided bush walks or activities on the Kariega River are available. Local drinks and conservation fees are already included in the price.

For an extra charge, you can also stay in a lodge with permanent rooms.

Long-haul flights to Southern Africa in Economy Class cost from EUR 900, while prices can be well over EUR 1000 in the high season. Flights in Premium Economy Class are available from 1500 EUR, in Business Class flights cost from 2500 EUR (per person for outward and return flights). All prices are average values depending on the airline and season. The actual prices at a given time depend on the number of bookings and may vary. Early booking is recommended, especially in the high season.
