Greater Durban area

Durban is the third largest city in South Africa and the lively metropolis of the province of KwaZulu-Natal. It is home to a particularly large number of South Africans of Indian descent, who have left their mark on the city's culture and cuisine. With the exception of a few highlights, Durban has unfortunately left its best days behind it in terms of tourism. However, the small coastal towns to the north and south and the hinterland are quieter and more attractive. More than one overnight stay is not really necessary for the greater Durban area.

Durban city center and Golden Mile

Durban is a melting pot of cultures. Life is just as colorful and hectic. Unfortunately, the city center and the Golden Mile beach promenade are long past their prime. Visits should only be made during the day at best and the city center should be avoided completely at weekends. The uShaka Marine World on South Beach, a large indoor and outdoor marine aquarium with an adjoining water slide park, is interesting. There are also many small stores and restaurants with a view of the sea or the harbor. The famous Moses Mabhida World Cup Stadium on the M12 north of the Golden Mile offers daily sightseeing tours, and the impressive steel arch can also be climbed. As in any big city, there are of course various shopping opportunities in Durban.

Coastal towns and hinterland

The small vacation resorts on the coast north and south of Durban are much quieter and more tranquil. Examples include La Lucia, Umhlanga Rocks, Umdloti and Ballito, where you can simply spend a few hours on the beach and swim in the Indian Ocean, which is warm almost all year round. The largest shopping center, the Gateway Shopping Mall, is located at Umhlanga Ridge. Those interested in the landscape can make a flying visit to the Valley Of A Thousand Hills near Hillcrest and enjoy the great views over the green hills and small Zulu villages. If you are traveling along the south coast of Durban towards the Wild Coast, you can make a detour to the Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve. The dramatic gorge of the Umzilkulwana River is a paradise for hikers.
