Kingdom of eSwatini

The Kingdom of Swaziland (new name eSwatini) borders South Africa and Mozambique and offers an authentic African experience. To connect Zululand and the Kruger Park, you can also take the N2 south around Swaziland, but crossing the country offers an interesting facet to a trip to South Africa. While the plateau in the southwest of the country is considered malaria-free, the northeastern lowlands bordering Mozambique have a slight risk of malaria. The kingdom is an independent state with its own entry requirements. At least one overnight stay is required when passing through, with two nights you have more time to discover the beauty of this small country.

Ezulwili Valley

The center and tourist highlight is the Ezulwini Valley with the two towns of Mbabane and Manzini, where political and social life takes place. Outside the cities, the valley offers many hiking and other activities. It is also home to the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, which is home to antelopes, zebras, giraffes, crocodiles and hippos. Mlilwane is easy to explore on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback; there is no dangerous game outside the rivers and lakes. The neighboring Mantenga Nature Reserve offers many scenic highlights. The Swazis are gifted artisans and a visit to one of the many art markets is well worthwhile. Souvenirs are usually cheaper here than in South Africa. Botanists will enjoy a visit to the Summerfield Botanical Garden. The region around the Ezulwini Valley is considered malaria-free.

Big Game Parks

Hlane Royal National Park is the largest wildlife park in Swaziland, covering 22,000 hectares, and is located in the north-east near Simunye. It is home to lions, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, zebras and more. Unfortunately, the area is cut through by the MR3 national road, which repeatedly leads to accidents with fatal outcomes for the animals. The country's second large wildlife park is the Mkhaya Game Reserve near Siphofaneni. Rhinos, elephants and giraffes live here alongside other wild animals. Mkhaya can only be visited on guided game drives; it is not possible to enter with your own rental car. Both Hlane and Mkhaya have a slight risk of malaria.
