Toyota Corolla Quest or similar

For a long time, the Toyota Corolla was the classic choice among sedan rental cars in South Africa, and to some extent in other countries in Southern Africa as well. Due to road conditions, it can now only be used in southwestern South Africa—specifically, in the region around Cape Town and along the Garden Route. The Toyota Corolla Quest is available with either a manual or automatic transmission. It can accommodate two passengers, each with one standard-sized suitcase and one carry-on bag. Other rental cars in the same category include the Nissan Almera, the Hyundai Accent, and the Kia Pegas.

Toyota Rumion or similar

The Toyota Rumion is the family-friendly counterpart to the Toyota Corolla Quest. Unfortunately, there are no traditional station wagons in southern Africa—such as the VW Passat or the Opel Insignia—so families usually have to settle for a large and expensive SUV. The Toyota Rumion is the more affordable alternative, though it’s only available with a manual transmission and, due to its design, is better suited for the southwestern part of South Africa. Toyota Urban Cruiser SUV or similar

The Toyota Urban Cruiser is a compact SUV suitable for all countries in Southern Africa, provided that the majority of the route follows designated national and regional roads and only a few kilometers need to be driven off these roads to reach the nearest lodging or attraction. The Toyota Urban Cruiser SUV is available with either a manual or automatic transmission. It can accommodate two travelers, each with one standard-sized suitcase and one carry-on bag. Toyota Corolla Cross SUV or similar

The Toyota Corolla Cross is a midsize SUV well-suited for all countries in Southern Africa. It handles longer trips on unpaved roads comfortably while remaining agile in city traffic. It therefore offers the best value for money of any rental car in Southern Africa. The Toyota Corolla Cross SUV is available exclusively with an automatic transmission. It can accommodate two to three passengers, each with one standard-sized suitcase and one carry-on bag. Toyota Fortuner SUV or similar

The Toyota Fortuner is the classic family SUV in Southern Africa and is well-suited for almost all road conditions. It can accommodate four passengers, each with a large suitcase and a carry-on bag, but is also a good choice for two travelers embarking on longer trips off the beaten path. The Toyota Fortuner is available exclusively with an automatic transmission. Although there are also models with all-wheel drive, it is not suitable for explicitly designated off-road trails. Toyota Hilux Double Cab 4×4 or similar

The Toyota Hilux Double Cab 4×4 is the ideal four-wheel-drive vehicle for long trips on unpaved roads and off the beaten path. It is, however, less suitable for city driving. The Toyota Hilux Double Cab 4×4 is available in both manual and automatic transmission models. It can accommodate four passengers, each with one large suitcase and one carry-on bag. Hyundai Staria or similar

The Hyundai Staria is the most popular minivan in Southern Africa, primarily in South Africa. It handles cross-country driving with ease, can handle even longer stretches of unpaved roads, and remains relatively maneuverable in city traffic. The Hyundai Staria is available exclusively with an automatic transmission. It comfortably seats six passengers, each with one standard-sized suitcase and one carry-on bag. It can even accommodate eight passengers with smaller luggage. Other rental cars in the same category include the VW Kombi and the Kia Carnival.
