ABOUT THIS TRIP

Only a few regions in the north-east of South Africa are at risk of malaria, unfortunately including the Kruger Park and northern KwaZulu-Natal, two major highlights. Nevertheless, it is quite easy to start a varied journey without missing out on the most important facets that characterize a trip to South Africa. You bridge the long distance between north and south by domestic flight. You will experience breathtaking landscapes on the Panorama Route, the Big Five malaria-free in a private game reserve in the north and in the state-owned Addo Elephant Park in the south, endless beaches and pristine forests on the Garden Route, Wild West romance along Route 62, culinary delights in the wine regions and Cape Town, one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

We are happy to change this tour itinerary or the rental car category according to your individual wishes. Please contact us for your personal offer. This trip can be started all year round, but we recommend focusing on the north from May to August. You should allow just under three weeks for this route. A four-wheel drive vehicle is not necessary for this route, but a vehicle with a higher wheelbase is definitely helpful.

You will receive your rental car on arrival at Johannesburg Airport or at the agreed station. This region of the province of Mpumalanga captivates at the transition from the highveld to the lowveld with breathtaking landscapes in the untouched African bush. From here you can easily experience the highlights of the Panorama Route on a round trip: God's Window, Bourke's Luck Potholes, the Blyde River Canyon and the Three Rondavels, Berlin and Lone Creek Falls, the former gold mining town of Pilgrims Rest, the Mac Mac Pools and much more.

This modern boutique hotel is located not far from the small village of Graskop and therefore very central to the highlights of the Panorama Route. The location directly on the cliffs overlooking the Lowveld provides a breathtaking view. The 34 rooms and suites all have a bathroom/WC, air conditioning, a TV, a safe, a minibar, a tea/coffee maker and free WLAN. The Superior Rooms are approximately 20 square meters in size. The Luxury Classic Suites, which are furnished to a high standard, are approximately 30 square meters in size. DAY 3 TO DAY 4 (APPROX. 180 KM):

BADPLAAS

The landscape of this region of the Mpumalanga province impresses with mountain ranges, wide river valleys and impressive grasslands. The Highveld and Lowveld meet between Badplaas and Barberton. The climatically temperate Highveld is the high plateau plain that extends as far as Johannesburg. The subtropical Lowveld stretches from northern Zululand-Natal via the Kruger Park to Mozambique. The region is home to Bushman rock paintings and a number of geological features, such as the oldest and largest meteorite impact in the world.

The luxurious Dawsons Game Lodge is situated on the Komati River between Barberton and Badplaas in a private nature reserve in beautiful surroundings. The area offers pure relaxation and recreation. You can fish for trout in the river, go archery or discover the reserve's animals such as giraffes, zebras and antelopes on foot. Bush drives in open off-road vehicles are also offered as an option. The eight spacious rooms offer a bathroom/WC, a fireplace, a minibar, a tea/coffee maker and a private veranda. The lodge has a pool, a restaurant, a bar, a TV lounge and a large garden area.

DAY 4 TO DAY 6 (APPROX. 370 KM):

ULUNDI

Your destination is the approximately 20,000-hectare private Babanango Game Reserve near Ulundi in northern KwaZulu-Natal. The reserve is malaria-free and is home to the Big Five and many other African wild animals. In contrast to the state-run Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park, only overnight guests have access to the private game reserves. These are therefore much better suited to a short stay for unique game viewing. The small lodges also offer a very personal atmosphere. Specially trained rangers ensure a first-class nature experience. Babanango is a community project in which the surrounding local communities are involved.

The upmarket Valley Lodge, a lavishly restored former farmhouse with a large garden, is located in the very south of the reserve. The entire lodge is enclosed by a game fence. The nine rooms have a bathroom/WC, air conditioning, a tea/coffee maker and a semi-private outdoor seating area. The Deluxe Rooms are closer to the Main Lodge than the Luxury Rooms. The slightly larger Family Rooms are also a little further away and have a sofa bed for two children under the age of 12. The spacious Romance Suite is set apart and has a private outdoor area with a daybed and fire pit. The lodge offers a viewing deck, a bar, a restaurant, a fitness room, a library, a sun deck with pool, a boma (traditional campfire dining area) and free Wi-Fi.

For each overnight stay you take part in two guided game drives in an open off-road vehicle (English-speaking, participation with other people), which take place in the afternoon before dinner and in the morning before breakfast.

DAY 6 TO DAY 7 (APPROX. 250 KM):

UMHLANGA

Continue to the metropolitan area of the lively metropolis of Durban. Visit the colorful markets or simply relax on one of the many excellent city beaches on the warm Indian Ocean, which invites you to swim here all year round. It is also worth visiting uShaka Marine World, a large aquarium and amusement park with stores and restaurants. The Moses Mabhida Stadium, inaugurated in 2010 for the World Cup, has become a tourist attraction.

At Ocean Vista Boutique Guesthouse in the quiet suburb of Umhlanga, north of Durban, you can expect a stunning view of the Indian Ocean and a modern ambience. The spacious veranda is the perfect place to enjoy the wonderful sea breeze. You will stay in one of seven light-flooded suites, all of which are equipped with bath/WC, air conditioning, some with terrace/balcony and some with sea view, safe, WLAN, satellite TV, minibar and tea/coffee station. The difference in the individual room categories relates only to the size of the room. The guest house offers a veranda with sea view, a lounge, a small pool, an honesty bar and a garden. The beach and La Lucia Shopping Mall with its many stores and restaurants are within walking distance.

DAY 7: DURBAN

ONEWAY FLIGHT TO PORT ELIZABETH

A domestic or regional flight is the fastest and most convenient way to cover longer distances in southern Africa. Thanks to various competitors, there is a dense network of scheduled flights to a total of more than 25 airports. All local airlines fly with modern aircraft that meet the highest safety standards and are of course regularly maintained, just like in Europe.

The flight is operated in Economy Class. Depending on the airline, only one piece of checked baggage weighing 20kg to 23kg and one piece of hand baggage are permitted per person. You will receive details with your travel documents. Additional baggage, seat reservations and other services can be booked at very reasonable prices. We recommend arriving at international airports such as Windhoek, Victoria Falls, Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town at least two hours before departure; at smaller regional airports, 90 minutes is sufficient.

Please return your rental car to Durban Airport or the agreed location at least two hours before departure.

DAY 7 TO DAY 9 (APPROX. 60 KM):

ADDO

On arrival at Port Elizabeth Airport or at the agreed station, you will receive your new rental car. Your destination is the malaria-free Addo Elephant Park in the Eastern Cape, famous for its large herds of elephants, which have given the park its name. Nowhere else in the world are there more elephants per square kilometer than here in Addo. With a bit of luck, you may also spot the other members of the Big Five, although the big cats are only found in relatively small numbers. A classic is the Addo Dung Beetle, a dung beetle species that can only be found here.

You will spend the night at the comfortable Addo Wildlife Lodge in the small town of Addo, just a few kilometers from the famous Addo Elephant Park. The grounds are home to springbok and other small game. There is a pool, a playground for children, a fire pit, a wildlife center with birds and reptiles, a farm store, a restaurant and a bar. The 17 rooms have a bathroom/WC, air conditioning, a tea/coffee maker, a TV, a minibar and a veranda with seating. The Standard Rooms are detached rondavels furnished in African style. The Superior Chalets, which are also detached, are more spacious and furnished in a modern style. The Superior Family Chalets have two separate bedrooms, each with its own bathroom/WC and a lounge with kitchenette.

The price includes an approximately four-hour game drive in an open off-road vehicle in Addo Elephant Park. The activity is conducted in English and can be done with additional people. Conservation fees for Addo Elephant Park are already included.

You will stay at Parkes Manor, a stately home in a 12,000 square meter park-like garden overlooking the lagoon. You can reach the waterfront or the city center in about 15 minutes on foot or a few minutes by car. The nine individual suites have a shower/WC with separate bathtub, a TV, tea/coffee making facilities, air conditioning, a minibar and a safe. The Cozy Suite on the first floor has a private courtyard without a view. The Standard Suites on the first floor have a rear balcony.
