ABOUT THIS TRIP
Only a few regions in the north-east of South Africa are at risk of malaria, unfortunately including the Kruger Park and the Hluhluwe/St. Lucia region, two major highlights. Nevertheless, it is quite easy to start a varied journey without missing out on the most important facets that characterize a trip to South Africa. You bridge the long distance between north and south by domestic flight. You will experience breathtaking landscapes on the Panorama Route and in the Drakensberg Mountains, the Big Five malaria-free in the private Nambiti Game Reserve, endless beaches and pristine forests on the Garden Route, Wild West romance along Route 62, seasonal whales near Hermanus, culinary delights in the wine regions and Cape Town, one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
We are happy to change this tour itinerary or the rental car category according to your individual wishes. Please contact us for your personal offer. This trip can be started all year round, but we recommend focusing on the north from May to August. You should allow just under three weeks for this route. A four-wheel drive vehicle is not necessary for this route, but a vehicle with a higher wheelbase is definitely helpful.

DAY 3 TO DAY 4 (APPROX. 260 KM):
ERMELO

Ermelo is the center of the so-called Grass And Wetlands region in the south of Mpumalanga province. Even before the arrival of the first white settlers, the area was a trade route on the way from east to west and north to south, which is why historical ruins dating back to the 14th century can be discovered. Nowadays, the town offers a variety of water sports as well as bird and game watching opportunities in the surrounding area.
The Highveld Splendour Boutique B&B is located on a working farm around ten minutes' drive from Ermelo. In addition to domestic and farm animals, overnight guests can also discover the farm's own wild animals such as zebras and springbok on their own. The seven modern rooms have a bathroom/WC, heating, a minibar, a tea/coffee maker, a TV, a safe and a veranda or balcony. The Executive Room is large enough for two extra beds for children. The accommodation offers a lounge, a pool, a breakfast room and free WiFi.

DAY 4 TO DAY 6 (APPROX. 250 KM):
LADYSMITH

Close to Ladysmith is the approximately 9000ha malaria-free Nambiti Game Reserve, still an insider tip in South Africa. The private game reserve is home to the Big Five and many other African wild animals such as zebras, giraffes, antelopes and cheetahs. The varied landscape consists of vast savannahs, dense bushland and green valleys, crossed by the Sundays River. In contrast to state-run national parks, only overnight guests have access to the private reserves. These are therefore much better suited to a short stay for unique wildlife sightings. The small lodges also offer a very personal atmosphere. Specially trained rangers ensure a first-class nature experience.
The luxurious Umzolozolo Safari Lodge is situated on a hill in the southern part of the Nambiti Private Game Reserve and offers spectacular views over the surrounding area. The lodge has nine luxurious detached chalets and suites with panoramic views that blend seamlessly into the landscape. All rooms are equipped with bath/WC, indoor and outdoor showers, air-conditioning, private balcony overlooking the valley, tea/coffee making facilities, hairdryer, TV and minibar. The Luxury Chalets are furnished in traditional safari style and have a pull-out sofa for children. A Luxury Chalet has two separate bedrooms, each with its own bathroom/WC. The Luxury Suites are slightly more spacious and more modern. The Presidential Suite also has an outdoor whirlpool. The lodge has a spacious lounge, an infinity pool with a view, a boma (traditional campfire dining area), a spa (for a fee) and free WiFi.
You will take part in two guided game drives per night in an open off-road vehicle (English-speaking, participation with other people), which take place in the afternoon before dinner and in the morning before breakfast. Conservation fees are paid on site.

The surrounding area also has a lot to offer with the Giants Castle Game Reserve, the Spioenkop Dam Nature Reserve and the Battlefields Route.
Stay in a chalet in the upscale Montusi Mountain Lodge with a view of the famous amphitheater. The well-kept and spacious outdoor area invites you to relax and unwind. Adventurous guests can reach all the highlights of the northern Drakensberg from here on day trips. ONEWAY FLIGHT TO PORT ELIZABETH

A domestic or regional flight is the fastest and most convenient way to cover longer distances in southern Africa. Thanks to various competitors, there is a dense network of scheduled flights to a total of more than 25 airports. All local airlines fly with modern aircraft that meet the highest safety standards and are of course regularly maintained, just like in Europe.

You will receive details with your travel documents. Additional baggage, seat reservations and other services can be booked at very reasonable prices. We recommend arriving at international airports such as Windhoek, Victoria Falls, Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town at least two hours before departure; at smaller regional airports, 90 minutes is sufficient.
Please return your rental car to Durban Airport or the agreed location at least two hours before departure.

At the Storms River Restcamp in the eastern part of the park, you can take short boat trips on the river of the same name. The famous Suspension Bridge, a suspension bridge over the river, is also located here. Various long hiking trails start directly at the camp. The western part, the Natures Valley, also offers beautiful nature and the best hiking opportunities. With a bit of luck, you can even spot whales (seasonal) and dolphins from land.
You will spend the night at The Fernery Lodge in a private nature reserve just east of the Storms River. From the lodge you have a breathtaking view over the Indian Ocean, the gorge of the Sanddrift River and the dense forests. Oudtshoorn is the jewel of the Little Karoo semi-desert and the largest town along Route 62. A stop at one of the local ostrich farms is a must, where you will learn a lot about the largest and flightless birds in the world. The Cango Caves, a huge stalactite cave landscape that is one of the most impressive in the world, are definitely worth a visit. Adventure-seekers with the right vehicle can take a drive over the famous Swartberg Pass, but guided tours are also available. An insider tip is the Rust en Vrede waterfall, located east of the Cango Caves. Clear nights with little light pollution make for an impressive starry sky, and professional stargazers offer appropriate observation activities. The cute meerkats can be spotted early in the morning on several farms. Some interesting wineries, such as the Karusa Estate, offer wine tastings.
Located at the foot of the mighty Swartberg Mountains in the beautiful Schoemanshoek Valley, halfway between Oudtshoorn and the Cango Caves, Berluda Farmhouse is part of a working ostrich farm.
